Hot to Burn Hold and Spin review

Hot to Burn Hold and Spin adds a coin collection round to a straightforward line game. Pragmatic Play released it in 2021 as a follow-up to Hot to Burn, and the extra layer is clear from the name: money symbols trigger respins, stick where they land and, if they fill every position, set a prize wheel spinning. There are no free spins, so the respin feature carries most of what the game can do.

The base game

Line wins are paid from left to right on adjacent reels. The wild substitutes for every symbol except the money symbol and the scatter, and the rules add that wilds can appear in random positions on any spin, which can turn a near miss into a line win without any trigger.

The scatter pays in any position, independent of the lines. Our pack lists its pay steps for three, four and five symbols, but not in a unit we can convert reliably into multiples of the bet, so check the in-game paytable for the exact values.

Neither a feature purchase nor an ante option appears in the rules. Every Hold and Spin round has to be earned by landing coins on a normal paid spin, which makes the cost of chasing the feature easy to understand: it is just your stake per spin multiplied by the spins it takes.

Hold and Spin, step by step

Money symbols can land on all reels, and on every spin each one takes a random value from a predefined set. Five or more on the same spin trigger the feature.

Hold and Spin Feature

Line wins are paid first. Then regular symbols fade, the triggering money symbols stay, and the reels switch to strips that hold only money symbols and blanks. According to the rules you start with 4 respins; every money symbol that lands sticks for the rest of the round, and any respin that adds at least one resets the counter to 4.

Prize wheel

The studio says that if every position on the grid is filled, a wheel spins and keeps awarding prizes of up to 5,000x until it stops on a blank segment with no prize. It is the top outcome of the respin round and needs the whole screen covered first.

Two details that do not match

The official sources disagree in two places. The studio's game page says each sticky money symbol resets the respins to three, while the rules document says the round starts with 4 respins and resets to 4. The rules are the more detailed source, but the demo's own help screen is the place to confirm which applies to the build you see.

The RTP differs too. Our catalogue lists 96.7%, while the rules document quotes a theoretical 94.65%. That gap matters: at 96.7% the house edge is 3.3%, about $33 per $1,000 wagered, and at 94.65% it would be noticeably higher. Pragmatic Play supplies different settings to different operators, so the info screen is the final word.

Numbers at the catalogue RTP

Using the 96.7% figure, 100 spins cost on average $0.66 at a $0.20 bet, $3.30 at $1 and $16.50 at $5. Those are long-run averages; a single short session can sit far above or below them.

The maximum win is limited to 20,000x the bet, which equals $4,000 at a $0.20 stake and $20,000 at $1. Pragmatic Play publishes no volatility rating in our data. Since the line game is simple and the big numbers depend on filling the whole grid during respins, the largest outcomes will be uncommon. Most spins are simply settled by the lines and the random wilds.

Relatives and alternatives

The original Hot to Burn from 2020 lists 96.71% but tops out at 1,000x, so the respin version raises the ceiling twentyfold. Dragon Hot Hold and Spin from the same year shares both the 96.7% RTP and the 20,000x cap, and Return of the Dead from 2020 lists 96.71% with the same cap.

Pros

  • Simple line game with random wilds that can appear on any spin
  • Sticky money respins that reset whenever a new coin lands
  • Prize wheel with awards of up to 5,000x for a full grid, per the studio
  • 20,000x cap, far above the original's 1,000x

Cons

  • The rules quote a 94.65% RTP against 96.7% in the catalogue
  • Studio page and rules disagree on the respin count
  • No free spins round

Verdict

Hot to Burn Hold and Spin is an uncomplicated line game whose real hook is the sticky coin round and the wheel behind a full grid. The catalogue lists a 96.7% RTP, but the rules quote 94.65%, and the volatility is not published, so check the build you play. The 20,000x cap is a rare top end. Treat it as paid entertainment, and use the free demo to learn the respins first.
