Book of Kingdoms review
Book of Kingdoms mixes two familiar slot ideas on one 5x3 screen. A book symbol works as both wild and bonus trigger, leading to free spins with a randomly chosen expanding symbol. Alongside it, coin symbols carry cash values or one of three fixed prizes and can start a separate respin round. Pragmatic Play released it in 2020, and the rules and the catalogue disagree on the return, which is worth knowing before anything else.
Layout and line wins
The studio describes a five-reel, three-row grid with 25 paylines. Line wins are read from left to right on adjacent reels, the classic way most book-style games pay.
One symbol does double duty. The book is the wild, standing in for regular symbols, and it is also the bonus symbol that opens the free spins. As a scatter-style bonus it pays on its own as well: three of them return 1x the total bet and four return 20x.
Two separate bonus paths
Most of the action is split between a free spins round driven by the book and a respin round driven by coins. They work independently, so a session can see one without the other.
Free Spins
Three or more book symbols trigger 5 free spins. Before the first spin, one regular symbol is picked at random to be the special expanding symbol. After normal line wins are paid, that symbol grows to fill all three rows of its reel and pays on all reels, even in non-adjacent positions, but only if enough copies are present for a win.
Money Symbol
The coin can land on any reel in the base game. Each one shows either a random cash value from a set list or one of three named prizes: Minor at 30x, Major at 100x and Mega at 1,000x the total bet. Landing 5 or more starts the Money Respin feature.
Money Respin
Line wins are paid first. Then the normal symbols disappear, the triggering coins stay, and the reels switch to special strips holding only coins and blanks. The round starts with 3 respins, and every coin that lands stays fixed until the end. The studio says the values of all coins are added together and paid.
How the bonus pieces fit together
The expanding symbol is what gives the free spins their range. When a high-paying symbol is chosen and lands on several reels, each copy can fill a whole reel and pay across lines it would not normally touch. When a low-paying symbol is picked, the same mechanic produces much smaller results. Only 5 spins are awarded, so the round is short, and the excerpt of the rules in our pack does not describe a retrigger.
The coin round works differently. It is a collection game: you are trying to keep the respins alive while coins accumulate, and the total depends on how many coins land and which values they show. A Mega coin alone is worth 1,000x the total bet.
Which RTP applies
Our catalogue lists one RTP of 96.69%, a house edge of 3.31%. At that rate about $33.10 is kept per $1,000 wagered over a long run, and 100 spins cost $0.66 at $0.20, $3.31 at $1 and $16.55 at $5 on average.
The official rules document in our pack, however, quotes a theoretical RTP of 90.68%. That would mean a much larger house edge. Studios often supply several RTP settings to operators, and the version you meet depends on where the game is offered. Check the RTP shown in the game's own info screen before playing; the gap between the two published figures is too wide to ignore.
The maximum win is capped at 20,000x the bet: $4,000 at a $0.20 stake and $20,000 at $1. No volatility rating is published.
Games with matching figures
There is no sequel in our catalogue. Return of the Dead from 2020 lists 96.71% and the same 20,000x cap. Cash Elevator from 2021 sits at 96.64% with 20,000x, and Might of Ra from 2022 offers 96.49% and a 22,500x maximum.
Pros
- Two independent bonus routes: book free spins and coin respins
- Expanding symbol pays on all reels, even non-adjacent ones
- Fixed coin prizes of 30x, 100x and 1,000x the total bet
- Free official demo available
Cons
- The rules quote a 90.68% RTP, far below the 96.69% catalogue figure
- Only 5 free spins per trigger
- No published volatility rating
Verdict
Book of Kingdoms combines a book-style free spins round with a coin respin game, and both are easy to understand. The catalogue lists a 96.69% RTP, but the official rules quote 90.68%, so check the version in front of you. Volatility is not published and the 20,000x cap is a rare outcome. Treat it as paid entertainment, and try the free demo before spending.
