Gem Crush review

Gem Crush sends you into a hidden temple on a tall 6x8 grid. Wins come from clusters of five or more touching symbols, which then vanish with Avalanche so that new ones can fall. Two special pieces change the board: a Rainbow Gem that turns one symbol type into another, and an XStrike multiplier. NetEnt released it in 2023 with Very high volatility and a top prize of 4,361x.

Clusters and Avalanche

A win needs five or more symbols in a cluster, and symbols join a cluster when they touch horizontally or vertically. Diagonal contact does not count. Winning symbols disappear, new ones fall in, and the drop can create further wins in the same round.

The Wild substitutes for every symbol except the Bonus and the Rainbow Gem. In the free spins it grows into a Colossal Wild covering a 2x2 tile.

Special symbols and multipliers

Three elements carry most of the variation, in both the main game and the free spins.

Rainbow Gem

When it appears it transforms one symbol type into another. It stays active through an avalanche of wins, and in the main game the number of transformations is unlimited. In the free spins up to 4 transformations are possible, and they last until the bonus ends.

XStrike multiplier

Activated at random in the main game and the free spins, it applies a global multiplier of x2, x3, x4 or x5 to the current spin. In the free spins the studio adds that the multiplier increases by +1 each time XStrike activates.

Colossal Wild

A free spins version of the Wild that covers a 2x2 tile. The studio states at least one lands on every free spin.

Free spins and the feature buy

Three Bonus symbols start 10 free spins. During the round, the studio lists a multiplier that increases by 1 on every second spin and does not reset, on top of the XStrike increases above. Combined with a Colossal Wild on every spin, the bonus is clearly built to grow as it goes.

The free spins can also be bought directly, and the studio puts the price of that feature buy at 70x the stake.

RTP, hit rate and cost

The RTP is 96.13% in a single version, a house edge of 3.87% and an average loss of $38.70 per $1,000 wagered. Hit frequency is 27.97% and volatility is Very high.

Over 100 spins the cost is $0.77 at a $0.20 bet, $3.87 at $1 and $19.35 at $5, where $500 is wagered. The max win of 4,361x equals $872.20 at $0.20, $4,361 at $1 and $21,805 at $5.

Comparable Very high NetEnt games

Superstars lists 96.08% and 4,500x. Parthenon: Quest For Immortality (2020) has 96.03% and 4,600x, Bee Hive Bonanza 96.09% and 5,000x, Serengeti Kings 96.2% and 4,900x, Twin Spin Megaways (2020) 96.04% and 4,900x and Rainforest Gold 96.07% and 5,085x. Pros

  • Cluster wins from five touching symbols, with Avalanche refills
  • Rainbow Gem transforms symbols and survives avalanches
  • A Colossal Wild on every free spin and a growing multiplier
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • Very high volatility, so swings can be large
  • The 4,361x max win is the lowest in its comparison group
  • The feature buy costs 70x the stake

Verdict

Gem Crush is a well-defined cluster game with Avalanche refills, a transforming Rainbow Gem and an XStrike multiplier, plus 10 free spins that build with a Colossal Wild each spin. The 96.13% RTP carries a 3.87% house edge, volatility is Very high and the ceiling is 4,361x. Try the free demo and keep the 70x feature buy in mind when setting a budget.
