Aztec Blaze review

Beast symbols fill the reels of Aztec Blaze, but the star is a block that grows. A colossal symbol can appear at random, starting at 2x2 and swelling with each win it takes part in. Once it is as large as the grid allows, it starts to hand out multipliers. The free spins use the same idea and add a twist: the round runs on lives, not on a fixed number of spins.

Six reels, four rows, 25 lines

The screen is 6x4 and wins pay on 25 lines, with matching symbols running from left to right. There are 10 symbols in all: eight regular ones, split into four high and four low, plus one Wild and one Scatter. The studio describes the regular symbols as beasts.

The base game has no tumbles or expanding reels. Everything unusual in the game happens through the colossal symbol.

The colossal symbol

At random, a colossal symbol can trigger and change the reel sizes. It starts at 2x2. Each win that includes it makes it larger, up to 4x4.

At 4x4 the growth stops, but further wins that contain the colossal symbol receive a rising multiplier, which the studio says reaches up to 10x. The logic is that the symbol needs to stay in winning combinations, because a win without it does nothing for its size.

Free spins on lives

Landing two scatters triggers the free spins, which is a lower count than the three that many slots ask for. The round plays like the colossal feature. You start with 5 lives, and a life is lost each time a spin does not produce a win that includes the colossal symbol.

A spin that keeps the symbol in a win keeps the lives, so the round lasts as long as the colossal symbol keeps working. That gives more chances to grow it and raise its multiplier. A retrigger refills lives, but only back up to 5.

The ante bet

Before each spin, the player can pay 40 credits instead of 25. The extra payment adds one life during the respins. If the base spin loses, that extra life is not applied. It is the first life to be spent, and it cannot be refilled. If it has not been used when the free spins start, the round begins with 6 lives instead of 5.

The catalogue lists no bonus buy for this game, so the ante is the only paid option we can describe.

Return and neighbours

Aztec Blaze lists one RTP, 96.5%, which means a house edge of 3.5% and about $35 lost per $1,000 wagered. A 100-spin session costs about $0.70 at a $0.20 bet, $3.50 at $1 and $17.50 at $5. Neither a max win nor a volatility label is published, so the review cannot give a ceiling.

Other 2022 games at 96.5% show how wide that missing figure can be. Cash Patrol lists 10,500x, Fire Strike 2 lists 25,000x, Gold Party lists 5,163x and Eye of Cleopatra lists 4,000x.

Pros

  • Colossal symbols grow from 2x2 to 4x4 and then add multipliers up to 10x
  • Free spins trigger from two scatters and run on lives
  • A 96.5% RTP and a 3.5% house edge
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • No max win or volatility label is published
  • The ante costs 40 credits instead of 25
  • The extra life from the ante cannot be refilled

Verdict

Aztec Blaze is a simple 25-line game made distinctive by one growing symbol and a bonus that runs on lives. The 96.5% RTP and 3.5% house edge are the whole of the return data we have, since no max win or volatility is published. Because the ceiling is unknown, the free demo is the right way to judge the pace, and any ante spend should be treated as an added cost.
