Aztec Gems review

Strip a slot back to three reels and three rows, then bolt on a fourth reel that only holds multipliers: that is Aztec Gems, a 2018 Pragmatic Play release with an Aztec setting. There are no free spins, no bonus buy and no ante. The appeal is speed and clarity. Three symbols line up, the multiplier reel decides how much they are worth, and the spin is over.

Three reels plus one

Wins come from three matching symbols on reels 1 to 3, along paylines from left to right. A single line win is worth up to 5x the bet, and when several lines win on the same spin their prizes stack.

The fourth reel carries multiplier symbols of 1x, 2x, 3x, 5x, 10x or 15x. Whatever it lands on scales the win from the first three reels. A 1x leaves the result unchanged, while the higher values are what lift an ordinary three-of-a-kind into a noticeable payout. The official rules list one wild, which substitutes for all symbols.

Multiplier reel

Reel four holds only multipliers: 1x, 2x, 3x, 5x, 10x or 15x. The value shown applies to the win formed on reels 1 to 3, so it matters only on spins that already produce a line win.

Wild

The wild substitutes for all symbols on the main reels, making it easier to complete three of a kind. The rules attach no multiplier or special behaviour to it.

What a session costs

Pragmatic Play's rules give a theoretical RTP of 96.52%, the only version in our data. The house edge is 3.48%, or about $34.80 per $1,000 wagered over a long run.

For a session of 100 spins, the average cost is $0.70 at $0.20, $3.48 at $1 and $17.40 at $5. The studio publishes neither a volatility rating nor a max win for this game. With no bonus round, every result comes from a single spin of four reels, which keeps the range of outcomes narrower than in bonus-driven slots, though we cannot put a number on it.

Deluxe, Megaways and neighbours

Two follow-ups carry the name. Aztec Gems Deluxe from 2020 lists a 96.5% RTP, and Aztec Gems Megaways from 2025 lists 96.58% with a 10,000x cap, a sign that the later version moves towards much bigger outcomes.

Among other Pragmatic Play games with similar figures, Great Rhino and Mustang Gold, both 2018, list 96.53% with caps of 900x and 12,000x. Hot Chilli from 2019 shares the 96.52% RTP with an 888x cap, and Extra Juicy from the same year also lists 96.52%.

Who will like it

Aztec Gems suits players who want a quick game with no bonus to wait for and nothing to learn beyond one wild and one multiplier reel. It is also a reasonable choice for short sessions on a small budget. Anyone who enjoys free spins, collecting features or very high ceilings will find it too plain and should look at the Megaways version instead. The free demo shows the pace in a minute.

Pros

  • Very simple rules: three reels, one wild, one multiplier reel
  • Multipliers up to 15x on every winning spin
  • Wins on several paylines stack
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • No free spins or bonus round
  • No volatility rating or max win published
  • A single line win is limited to 5x the bet before the multiplier

Verdict

Aztec Gems is about as compact as a modern slot gets: three reels, a wild, and a fourth reel of multipliers from 1x to 15x that decides the size of each win. The RTP is 96.52%, but no volatility or max win is published and there is no bonus. It works best as a quick, low-commitment game, played with a set budget and the 3.48% house edge in mind.
