with the Devil review

Every feature in this underworld slot runs through a single square. Red Tiger's 2024 release, listed by the studio as Play with the Devil, reserves the very centre of its 5x3 grid for a Devil Wild, and nothing else of value happens without him. Coin values, four fixed bonus prizes up to 1,000x and the free spins chests all wait for the Devil to land. The result is a game where one position decides most outcomes.

One position that matters

The grid is five reels by three rows with 20 lines, and stakes run from €0.10 to €50 per spin. The Devil Wild can only land on the central position of the middle reel. If he does not appear on a spin, that single position may randomly respin to bring him in.

When he lands he does three jobs at once: he substitutes for every symbol except scatters, he unlocks any Coin Prizes and Bonus Prizes on the screen, and he throws flames at two chests above the reels that can start the free spins. Without him, coin and bonus symbols are just decoration.

What the Devil unlocks

The two prize types work on the same principle: they only count when the Devil Wild is on the reels in the same spin.

Devil Wild

Lands only in the centre of the middle reel, with a random respin of that spot as a second chance. Substitutes for all symbols except scatters, activates any coin and bonus symbols present, and sends fireballs into the chests above the reels, which may start free spins at random.

Coin Prizes

Coin symbols carry values of 0.5x, 1x or 2x the stake. They pay only when the Devil Wild lands alongside them, and if several appear together, their values are added up into one prize.

Bonus Prizes

Four fixed tiers tied to the stake: Mini at 5x, Minor at 10x, Major at 75x and Mega at 1,000x. A tier pays when its Bonus symbol and the Devil Wild land in the same spin, and each Bonus symbol that lands with him awards its multiplier.

Chests, free spins and buying in

Each time the Devil lands, he makes deposits into the two chests above the reels. One chest or both may then activate at random, awarding 6 or 12 free spins. During the round the Devil Wild is locked in the centre for every spin, so coin and bonus symbols are always unlocked, and he keeps feeding the chests, which can retrigger another 6 or 12 spins.

Two purchases are available. For 6x the stake, a Devil Wild spin makes sure the Devil appears together with at least one Coin Prize, with room for more coins and bonus prizes. For 66x the stake, the free spins are bought directly through a Devil Wild that triggers them. Both are paid shortcuts to a feature; neither changes the odds of what that feature pays.

Cost and range

One RTP is on file: 95.71%, a house edge of 4.29%. Across a long run that means about $42.90 per $1,000 wagered, and over 100 spins the average cost is $0.86 at $0.20, $4.29 at $1 and $21.45 at $5.

The game is rated Medium volatility with a 31.85% hit frequency, so close to one spin in three returns something. Its ceiling is 2,523x: $504.60 at $0.20, $2,523 at $1 and $12,615 at $5. Since the Mega Bonus alone is worth 1,000x, the largest outcomes depend on bonus symbols landing while the Devil is in place, which happens on every spin of the free spins round.

The Megaways version and similar games

With the Devil Megaways is the related title in the catalogue, at 96.12% with a Very high rating and a 14,440x cap, a very different risk profile. Among games with numbers close to the original, Cash Volt shares the 95.71% RTP with a 2,500x top, Vault Cracker Megaways lists 95.68% and 2,484x, and Dragon King: Legend of the Seas shows 95.74% and 2,641x, all Medium.

Pros

  • The Devil Wild stays locked in the centre for the whole free spins round
  • Four fixed Bonus Prizes from 5x up to 1,000x the stake
  • Free spins can retrigger 6 or 12 more spins
  • Two buy options, at 6x and 66x the stake

Cons

  • Coins and bonus symbols pay nothing unless the Devil lands
  • The 95.71% RTP means a 4.29% house edge
  • Free spins start at random from the chests, with no scatter count to follow

Verdict

Play with the Devil hangs every feature on one central wild: when he lands, coins worth 0.5x to 2x and bonus prizes from 5x to 1,000x pay, and in the free spins he stays put for every spin. The 95.71% RTP leaves a 4.29% house edge, and the Medium volatility with a 2,523x cap keeps the range moderate. The buy options cost 6x and 66x the stake. Set a firm limit before using them.
