Zeus Lightning Power Reels review

Red Tiger sets this 2020 release in the temple of Zeus, on seven reels and six rows with 30 win lines. Zeus himself is a tall wild, three cells high, and when he lands in full view he calls down lightning that spreads one random symbol across the reels. The free spins add two more Zeus symbols and end in a gamble on the Royal Wheel. The 97.73% RTP is high for the catalogue, and volatility is listed as High.

The Zeus super symbol and the lightning expansion

Zeus is a 1x3 wild that substitutes for every paying symbol, and one can land on each spin. If he is fully visible on the reels, lightning strikes and the game expands the same random symbol on a random number of reels, which in theory can fill the entire grid.

The expanded symbol is paid when matching symbols sit anywhere on the same win line, including positions that are not next to each other. A line win therefore does not need an unbroken run of the symbol.

Free spins symbols and the Royal Wheel

Two free spins symbols anywhere on the reels pay 2x the bet. Three pay 5x the bet and award eight free spins. When the round begins, two further Zeus super symbols join the reels, so up to three can land in a single spin.

With several Zeus symbols in view, the first triggers an ordinary expansion. The other two either expand more symbols of the same type or, if none of that type remain to expand, upgrade the expanded symbols to the next higher paying one.

Royal Wheel gamble

A player may collect the eight free spins or gamble them on the Royal Wheel. The first spin of the wheel can reach up to 20 spins, the second up to 30 and the third and last up to 40. The lowest result of gambling the initial eight is 4 spins, so the gamble can halve the round as well as extend it.

Extra Zeus symbols

Two additional Zeus super symbols are added to the reels for the whole free spins round. This raises the per-spin maximum from one to three, which is where the bonus gets its extra power compared with the base game.

RTP, volatility and max win

The recorded RTP is 97.73%, a house edge of 2.27%. Over a long run that is about $22.70 lost per $1,000 wagered. In short sessions, 100 spins at $0.20 cost $0.45 on average, 100 spins at $1 cost $2.27, and 100 spins at $5, or $500 wagered, cost $11.35. The hit frequency is 31.83%.

Volatility is High. The catalogue lists a max win of 5,037x the bet, which is $1,007.40 at a $0.20 bet, $5,037 at $1 and $25,185 at $5. The studio's own copy speaks of wins over 4,500x, a lower figure; we show both and treat 5,037x as the catalogue maximum.

Similar High-volatility slots

Among High-volatility peers, Phoenix (2016) lists 96.29% and 5,288x, Wild Elements 96.2% and 5,142x, Reactor 96.02% and 5,000x, and Happy Cappy 96.2% and 6,590x. Mega Dragon is at 96.17% with 3,946x and Mega Rise at 96.08% with 6,375x. Zeus has the highest RTP of the group by well over a point, while its 5,037x ceiling sits below four of the six.

Pros

  • A 97.73% RTP, a house edge of just 2.27%
  • Zeus expands a symbol across a random number of reels, and lines pay even with gaps
  • Free spins bring up to three Zeus symbols per spin
  • A 31.83% hit frequency is published

Cons

  • The Royal Wheel gamble can cut the eight free spins to 4
  • High volatility means long stretches of small or no returns are normal

Verdict

Zeus Lightning Power Reels pairs a generous 97.73% RTP with High volatility and a 5,037x max win. The Zeus wild is the centre of everything, and the free spins make it stronger, though the Royal Wheel gamble adds a choice that can shrink the round. It costs about $22.70 per $1,000 wagered on average, which is paid entertainment with a house edge, not a way to profit.
