Wings of Ra Megaways review

The free spins in Wings of Ra Megaways work backwards. Instead of adding symbols, they take them away. Red Tiger's 2024 Egyptian game collects Mystery Coins in a progress bar, and each time the bar fills, the lowest-paying royal symbol vanishes from the reels. With fewer low symbols left, wins come from a smaller pool of better ones. The base game runs on up to 117,649 ways, and the top win is 20,000x the bet.

Ways, Wilds and Mystery Coins

The grid has six reels and up to seven rows, which is the source of the 117,649 maximum ways. Wilds can land on reels two to five and substitute for all paying symbols.

Mystery Coins spin and then reveal a random paying symbol. Every coin in the same spin reveals the same symbol. The studio adds that they do not appear during chain reactions, so they only show on the first drop of a spin.

Free spins that shrink the symbol set

Three or four free spins scatters on reels two to five in one spin trigger 10 or 15 free spins. Free spins scatters do not appear in the bonus round itself.

During the round, every Mystery Coin that lands feeds a special progress bar. Each time it fills, the lowest-paying royal symbol still on the reels is removed from the following spins. If the removed symbol is part of a win, any remaining symbols of that type disappear after the winning ones do. Once gone, that symbol can no longer be revealed by a Mystery Coin.

The five stages

The bar needs 15 coins for the first stage, which removes the royal 10. The total then rises by 15 each stage: 30 for the J, 45 for the Q, 60 for the K and 75 for the A. After five stages every royal is gone, which leaves only the higher-paying symbols.

Buying the round

Two buy options are listed. Free Spins gives 10 spins for 100x the stake, and Mega Free Spins gives 15 spins for 200x. Both match the natural triggers, which award 10 and 15 spins, but the entry is paid for up front instead of earned by scatters.

What the numbers say

The RTP is 95.68% and the house edge is 4.32%, about $43.20 lost per $1,000 wagered. Volatility is Very high and the hit frequency is 27.97%. A 100-spin session costs about $0.86 at a $0.20 bet, $4.32 at $1 and $21.60 at $5.

The 20,000x maximum equals $4,000 at $0.20, $20,000 at $1 and $100,000 at $5. A bought round at 100x or 200x the stake is a large share of a session budget, and the RTP shown in our catalogue is not split by how the bonus was entered.

The 2020 original and comparable Megaways

The earlier Wings of Ra from 2020 is listed at 95.69%, High volatility and a 3,166x maximum. The Megaways version keeps almost the same RTP but a ceiling over six times higher and a Very high label.

Among similar games, Athens Megaways shares the 95.68% RTP with a 19,992x maximum, and Zeus Lightning Megaways, Buffalo Mania Megaways and Rainbow Jackpots Megaways list 20,000x or just under. Bass Boss Megaways reaches 25,539x and Gonzo's Quest Megaways 20,972x.

Pros

  • Up to 117,649 ways on a six-reel grid
  • Free spins remove low symbols as the Mystery Coin bar fills
  • Free spins can be bought at 100x or 200x the stake
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • Very high volatility with a 95.68% RTP and 4.32% house edge
  • Buying the bonus costs 100x or 200x the stake
  • Mystery Coins do not appear in chain reactions

Verdict

Wings of Ra Megaways has a clear idea: a free spins round where the symbol pool shrinks as coins are collected. The 95.68% RTP, 4.32% house edge and Very high volatility describe a game where long stretches without a win are normal. If you try the Feature Buy, remember that it costs 100x or 200x the stake. The free demo shows the symbol removal without any spend.
