Wings of Ra review
Wings of Ra looks like a compact Egyptian five-reeler, and in the base game it mostly is one. The interest lies in its free spins, where Red Tiger lets collected Mystery Coins eat away at the paytable. Every time a progress bar fills, the weakest remaining symbol is turned into coins, until only the top symbol is left as a possible reveal. Released in February 2020, it carries a High volatility rating and a 95.69% RTP.
A small board with ten lines
The grid is 5x3 with 10 win lines. Red Tiger describes all wins as adjacent pays, so what counts is a run of matching symbols on neighbouring reels along a line. Stakes are listed from €0.10 to €50 per spin.
Ten lines is a short list, and the studio's hit frequency of 22.49% matches that: on average a little over one spin in five returns a win of some size. Much of the time the reels simply clear and spin again.
What a Mystery Coin does
Mystery Coins are the one special symbol that matters in both stages of the game. When coins land, they spin and reveal a random symbol, and every coin in the same spin shows the same one. A screen with several coins can therefore turn into a block of identical symbols across the lines.
In the base game that is the whole story. In the free spins the coins also feed a meter, and that meter changes which symbols the coins can turn into.
Mystery Coins
Coins land, spin and reveal one random symbol. All coins in a spin show the same symbol, so their value depends on how many land together and which symbol they become.
Coin progress bar
Free spins only. Each Mystery Coin that lands is added to a bar that needs 14 coins to fill. A full bar converts every copy of the current lowest-paying symbol into Mystery Coins, and that symbol is removed from the list the coins can reveal. Symbols converted this way also count towards the bar, and it can fill again and again.
Bonus spins that thin the paytable
Three free spins symbols anywhere on the reels award 12 bonus spins. Every free spins symbol above those three adds 3 more spins to the starting total.
Once the round is running, the coin bar takes over. Each fill removes the lowest symbol still in play and turns its copies into coins, which in turn push the bar closer to the next fill. The process continues until every symbol except the highest-paying one has been converted. A round that fills the bar several times ends up with coins that can only reveal the better symbols, which is where the game's larger results are designed to come from. A round that never fills it plays much like the base game.
Return, cost and the ceiling
There is a single RTP on file: 95.69%, which equals a house edge of 4.31%, or about $43.10 per $1,000 wagered over a long run. For 100 spins, the average cost is $0.86 at $0.20, $4.31 at $1 and $21.55 at $5.
The catalogue and the studio's stats line both put the maximum at 3,166x the bet, while the studio's introduction rounds it to treasures of up to 3,000x. Using the precise figure, the top win is $633.20 at $0.20, $3,166 at $1 and $15,830 at $5. With a High volatility rating and most of the upside tied to the bar in the free spins, results between bonuses are uneven by design.
The Megaways version and neighbours
One related game sits in the catalogue: Wings of Ra Megaways, at 95.68% with Very high volatility and a 20,000x cap, a far wider spread than the original. Similar numbers appear on Tiki Fruits: Totem Frenzy and Christmas Morning, both at 95.69% with High ratings and ceilings of 3,319x and 3,002x, and on Cirque de la Fortune at 95.73% and 3,471x.
Pros
- The coin bar steadily removes low symbols during free spins
- Extra free spins symbols add 3 spins each to the 12 starting spins
- Simple 10-line layout with adjacent pays
Cons
- A 22.49% hit frequency means most spins pay nothing
- The 95.69% RTP leaves a 4.31% house edge
- The studio quotes both 3,000x and 3,166x as the top figure
Verdict
Wings of Ra keeps its base game plain and saves its one clever idea for the bonus: Mystery Coins that fill a bar and strip the weakest symbols from the reels until only the best is left. The 95.69% RTP and High volatility mean a 4.31% house edge and patchy sessions, with a 3,166x ceiling. It suits patient players who like a bonus that builds. Decide on a spending limit before starting.
