Rainbow Jackpots Megaways review

The original Rainbow Jackpots dates from 2016 and had Medium volatility. Red Tiger's 2024 follow-up turns the dial far higher, adding the Megaways engine, a feature buy option and a Lucky Leprechaun who can appear at any time and pick from five different features. Two of those are pick-and-win bonuses with cash prizes, so this release is less about one big free spins round and more about which door the Leprechaun opens.

Megaways base game

The reel layout offers up to 117,649 ways to win, and the studio also lists a feature buy-in. The base game is therefore a ways game, and the extras on top of it come mostly through the Leprechaun.

What the Leprechaun can trigger

A Lucky Leprechaun may appear unexpectedly and trigger one of five features at random. Two of them change the reels, one starts free spins and the other two open cash-prize bonuses.

Random Tile

Releases single tiles of paying symbols or wilds, creating three or more pairs of these symbols on the first reels, left to right.

Mega Random Tile

Ejects super paying symbols or Super Wilds, again three or more on the first reels. They hold multipliers between 2x and 7x and count as multiple symbols in win ways.

Free Spins

Three or four Free Spin symbols are placed on the central reels, which starts either Free Spins or Mega Free Spins.

Beer Bonus and Fairy Bonus

Three or four Beer Bonus symbols on reels 2 to 5 start the Beer Bonus, and four symbols give the Mega version. Four taps appear above the middle four reels. In the regular Beer Bonus you pick one tap for an instant cash prize. In the Mega version all four taps are awarded without a pick. Each tap pours beer into a glass over the reels, and each glass holds a stake multiplier cash prize.

Three or more Fairy Bonus symbols activate the Fairy Bonus. Four, five or six scatters move the start to level 2, 3 or 4. The bonus has 6 levels, each with 6 crystals to choose from, and picks reveal instant cash prizes. Some crystals on higher levels carry level-up arrows that grant an extra pick on the next level. Because the Leprechaun can also start this bonus, it works as a second route to big prizes alongside the free spins.

Free spins

Three or four symbols landing on reels 2 to 5 start the free spins and give 10 spins. Four symbols make it Mega Free Spins. During the round every win raises a global win multiplier; the studio text we hold cuts off before giving its starting value, so it is not stated here.

Numbers

The only RTP on record is 95.77%, a house edge of 4.23%, or about $42.30 lost per $1,000 wagered. Hit frequency is 21.75% and volatility is Very high. Max win is 20,000x the bet: $4,000 at $0.20, $20,000 at $1 and $100,000 at $5.

Average cost over 100 spins is $0.85 at $0.20, $4.23 at $1 and $21.15 at $5. The 2016 original lists 96.14% RTP, Medium volatility and a 1,054x max win, so the sequel trades a little RTP for a far higher ceiling.

Alternatives

Gonzo's Quest Megaways matches the 95.77% figure with a 20,972x max win. Zeus Lightning Megaways and Buffalo Mania Megaways list 95.69%, Wings of Ra Megaways and Athens Megaways 95.68%, and Magic Powers Megaways 95.7% with 25,440x. All carry a Very high rating.

Pros

  • Five Leprechaun features give the base game several routes to a bonus
  • Beer Bonus and Fairy Bonus are pick-and-win rounds with cash prizes
  • Max win of 20,000x the bet
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • Very high volatility with a 21.75% hit frequency
  • RTP of 95.77% is lower than the 2016 original
  • Several bonuses mean the rules take time to learn

Verdict

Rainbow Jackpots Megaways is a feature-heavy Megaways game in which a single character decides what happens next. The 95.77% RTP and Very high volatility match the similar Megaways games listed above, and the 20,000x ceiling is reached rarely. At a 4.23% house edge it costs about $42.30 per $1,000 wagered, so keep stakes modest and try the free demo to see which bonuses appear.
