The Hand of Midas review

The Hand of Midas builds its whole design around one idea: wilds that add to the result instead of just filling gaps. In the main game each wild brings a small multiplier. In the bonus the wilds stay put. Pragmatic Play released it in 2021 as a payline slot with a 5,000x ceiling, an optional higher bet that makes the bonus more likely, and a free spins round that comes with a built-in minimum payout.

How a spin pays

This is a classic payline slot. Matching symbols pay when they line up from the left across adjacent reels. The pack does not give an exact number of lines, so we do not quote one. There are no tumbles, no respins and no expanding reels, which keeps the base game simple to follow.

The wild substitutes for every symbol except the scatter, and it can only appear on reels two, three and four. What sets it apart is the multiplier. Each time a wild lands in the base game it adds a random 1x, 2x or 3x to the total win of that spin. If several wilds land together, their multipliers are added to each other rather than multiplied, so the spin total is scaled by the sum. A multiplier of 1x leaves the win unchanged, so a wild does not always raise the payout.

The bonus, step by step

Three or more scatters start the free spins round, and the scatter appears on the reels in the base game only. The way spins are awarded is unusual. Instead of a fixed count, every triggering scatter produces three mini reels, and each mini reel shows one, two or three free spins. All of them spin, and the sum is the number of spins you play. Five scatters therefore mean fifteen mini reels and up to 45 spins in the best case.

The studio also attaches a minimum payout to the round: 10x the bet for three scatters, 20x for four and 30x for five. If the spins finish below that floor, the round is extended with another mini reel for each scatter that began it. That is a protective rule for the bonus itself, not a promise about any single session.

Mini reel spins

Each scatter that triggers the round brings three mini reels. A mini reel can hold one, two or three free spins, and the total across all mini reels is played. With five scatters the top total is 45 spins, which the studio also gives as the ceiling.

Sticky wilds in the bonus

During the free spins every wild that lands becomes sticky and stays on the screen. The round also carries a general win multiplier that applies to the total win of each spin, so the build-up of wilds matters more here than in the base game.

Minimum win and extra mini reels

Three, four or five scatters set a floor of 10x, 20x or 30x the bet for the round. When the spins end and that floor has not been reached, one more mini reel per original scatter is awarded and the round continues.

Ante bet: more scatters, higher cost

The game offers a choice of bet multiplier. At 20x you play normally. At 25x the chance of landing the free spins naturally is doubled, because more scatter symbols are present on the reels. Moving from 20x to 25x makes each spin cost 1.25 times as much, so the extra bonus chances are paid for on every spin, including the ones that do nothing. There is no bonus buy in this game.

RTP, volatility and max win

Our catalogue lists one RTP for The Hand of Midas, 96.54%, which is a house edge of 3.46%. In plain terms the average cost is $34.60 for every $1,000 wagered. The official rules document, however, prints a theoretical RTP of 94.51%. We read that as another published version of the game that an operator may run, so check the figure in the game's own info screen before you start.

Short sessions look like this at the headline RTP. One hundred spins at $0.20 cost about $0.69, at $1 about $3.46, and at $5 (a total of $500 wagered) about $17.30. Volatility is not published in our data, so we will not label it. The maximum win is capped at 5,000x the bet, which is $1,000 at a $0.20 stake, $5,000 at $1 and $25,000 at $5. Those are ceilings, not typical outcomes.

Similar games from the same year

Several 2021 releases sit close on the numbers. Hot Fiesta lists 96.56% with a 5,000x max win, Juicy Fruits 96.51% and 5,000x, Bounty Gold 96.5% and 5,000x, and Wild Booster 96.47% and 5,000x. Book of Vikings reaches 5,500x at 96.5%, while Day of Dead stops at 4,500x with 96.49%. The 5,000x cap here is therefore typical for the group, not unusual.

Pros

  • Wild multipliers of 1x, 2x or 3x stack by addition when several wilds land
  • Free spins come with a minimum payout of 10x, 20x or 30x the bet
  • Up to 45 free spins from five scatters through the mini reel system
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • Volatility is not published, so the swing size is unclear before you play
  • The ante bet raises the cost of every spin by a quarter
  • The official rules mention a lower 94.51% RTP, so the version in use matters

Verdict

The Hand of Midas pairs a simple payline base game with a bonus that has a clear structure: mini reels set the spin count, wilds stick, and a minimum payout protects the round itself. The headline RTP is 96.54%, the max win is 5,000x and volatility is not published. It will suit players who want a defined bonus design rather than cascades. Remember the 3.46% house edge, and try the free demo to see the pace.
