The Wild Gang review

The Wild Gang is a 2023 Western slot from Pragmatic Play with an uncommon shape: six reels set out as 3-4-4-4-4-3 instead of a rectangle. Wins pay from left to right with three or more symbols. The wilds are the hook. Four of them, each a different character, can land on reels two to five, and landing enough of them at once opens one of two free spins modes.

An uneven six-reel layout

The reel formation is 3-4-4-4-4-3. Symbols include blades, bottles and sheriff badges, and a win needs at least three matching symbols running from left to right. Four wilds appear on the second, third, fourth and fifth reels. They look different, one character each, but behave the same way.

When wilds land on the second and third reels, they work as ordinary wilds, standing in for all pay symbols, and each gains a random multiplier of up to x4.

Wilds that turn into scatters

If three or more wilds land on one base-game spin, they stop acting as wilds and work as scatters. That is how the free spins start, and the number of wilds decides which of the two modes opens.

In both modes a multiplier meter collects values and keeps them until the round ends. The meter's total applies to the win of each spin.

Wanted Free Spins

Triggered by three wilds. The first time wilds land during the bonus they grant a x2 multiplier, and the second time a x3. These values go into the persistent meter.

Dead or Alive Free Spins

Triggered by four wilds. The grid expands to 6x4 and offers 4,096 ways to win, and wilds carry a x4 multiplier. It needs one more wild than the Wanted mode, and it is the mode with the bigger grid.

Bonus buy

Either round can be bought in the base game. Wanted Free Spins cost 80 times the bet and Dead or Alive Free Spins cost 200 times the bet, a price that rises with the stake.

Return and cost

The recorded RTP is 96.2%, with a house edge of 3.8%. That is $38 per $1,000 wagered on average. Over 100 spins, the average loss is $0.76 at $0.20, $3.80 at $1 and $19 at $5, a total of $500 wagered. A bonus buy at 200 times the bet pays a large sum up front, so the cost of a single purchase can be many times the average cost of a normal 100-spin session.

Volatility and max win are not published in our catalogue.

Others from 2023

Forge of Olympus lists 96.25% and Frozen Tropics 96.15%, both from 2023. Gravity Bonanza, Infective Wild and Sugar Supreme Powernudge share 96.09%, and Candy Blitz is at 96.08%. Forge of Olympus is the only one in this group with a higher return than The Wild Gang.

Pros

  • Four wilds on reels two to five, with random multipliers up to x4
  • Two free spins modes, one with 4,096 ways to win
  • Multipliers are collected in a meter that lasts to the end of the round
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • Bonus buy costs 80 or 200 times the bet, which is a lot to stake at once
  • No volatility label or max win in our catalogue

Verdict

The Wild Gang gets its identity from the odd reel formation and from wilds that double as scatters. The 96.2% RTP leaves a 3.8% house edge, and the bonus buy raises the cost of each attempt sharply. The free demo is the best way to see how often wilds line up for the two bonus modes.
