Clover Gold review
Clover Gold splits its reels into two jobs. The first four reels carry money symbols worth between 1x and 100x the bet; the fifth reel holds special collect symbols that decide what happens to them. Pragmatic Play set the 2022 game in the Irish countryside and wrapped a free spins round around the same mechanic, with a multiplier that grows each time the round is retriggered. It is a payline slot underneath, which keeps the base game easy to read.
Money on four reels, collectors on one
Wins in the base game pay left to right on paylines, and the wild substitutes for everything except the bonus, money and collect symbols. The money feature runs alongside. Money symbols can land on reels 1 to 4 and each takes a random value from a preset list, which the studio puts at 1x to 100x the bet.
The rules tie the feature to a meeting: money symbols plus a collect symbol on reel 5 are what award it, which is why the game feels like two systems layered together: paylines for ordinary wins, collection for the feature.
The collect symbols
There are five types of collect symbol, all confined to the fifth reel. If at least one money symbol lands with one of them, a feature is awarded. The rules sheet describes the following behaviours.
According to the studio, the other types can increase or multiply the value of the money symbols or add extra money symbols; it gives no further detail, so we describe only the three above.
Collect
The simplest of the five. The values of all money symbols currently on the screen are added together and paid. It sets the baseline against which the other collect symbols are measured.
Respin Collect
Every money symbol and collect symbol already on the screen stays where it is, and all the remaining cells respin to reveal a new result. The money values on screen are then added together. Because the symbols stay, each respin can only add to the total.
Expanding Collect
Every reel that holds at least one money symbol expands to fill the whole reel with money symbols. The added symbols take new random values, all values are summed and the total is paid. A single money symbol on a reel therefore becomes a full column.
Free spins and the growing multiplier
Three bonus symbols on reels 2 to 4 start the bonus round with eight free spins, and the same three symbols also pay 1x the total bet. The money collect feature stays active in the round.
The retrigger rule is what shapes the round. Every fourth collect symbol awards eight more free spins and raises the multiplier on money collections. The steps are 2x for the first retrigger, 3x for the second and 5x for the third, so the later retriggers are worth more than the earlier ones.
RTP, cost and top win
Clover Gold lists a 96.54% RTP, which is a 3.46% house edge or $34.60 lost per $1,000 wagered on average. A 100-spin session costs $0.69 at a $0.20 bet, $3.46 at $1 and $17.30 at $5.
