Retro Tapes review

Push Gaming dresses a cluster-pays slot in cassette tapes. Groups of five or more identical tapes are collected, spin away and make room for new ones to fall in. Around that sit instant prize symbols worth up to 1,000x the bet, a wild multiplier and a magnet that pulls matching symbols together. The most important detail for a player, however, is that the game exists in two RTP versions.

Clusters and instant prizes

A cluster needs five or more identical tapes. When it forms, the tapes are collected and new ones fall into the gaps, which can chain into further clusters. The studio says cluster payouts range from 0.1x to 1,000x.

Instant Prize symbols are bet multipliers that pay when a cluster of five or more forms around them. The possible values are 1x, 2x, 5x, 10x, 25x, 50x, 100x, 250x, 500x and 1,000x.

Wilds, the multiplier and the magnet

The Wild Tape stands in for every symbol except the Magnet and the Wild Multiplier. It lands on the reel with a 1x multiplier, and each cluster win involving the Wild Multiplier raises that by one. It also acts as a scatter: three or more landing together start the Free Games feature.

Wild Multiplier

Available in the base game and in the Top Charts feature. It passes its multiplier value to every Wild Tape on the reels and then turns into an Instant Prize symbol of random value.

Magnet

It picks one type of paying symbol at random and pulls every copy on the reels into a cluster. If it chooses Instant Prize symbols, at least four must be present for a cluster to form. It then becomes the paying symbol or a random Instant Prize.

Top Charts

When it starts, all Wild Tape and Instant Prize symbols stay in place. Each free spin then lands on one of six results: Blank Space, Wild Tape, Wild Multiplier, Instant Prize, Magnet or Extra Spin. Instant Prizes stay until the end of the feature, when they are evaluated and all clusters are collected.

Two RTPs, two costs

Our catalogue records two versions. At 96.47% the house edge is 3.53%, an average cost of $35.30 per $1,000 wagered. At 94.46% the edge is 5.54%, or $55.40 per $1,000. That is roughly $20 more for the same wagering. Over 100 spins at $1 the averages are $3.53 and $5.54, and at $5 they are $17.65 and $27.70.

Which version you get is decided by the operator, not by the player, so it is worth checking the game's information screen. Our catalogue lists no volatility label and no max win for Retro Tapes.

Nearby on the RTP scale

Boss Bear lists 96.47%, the same as the higher version here. Giga Jar is at 96.48%, Retro Sweets and Tiki Tumble at 96.49%, and Fat Rabbit and Fat Santa at 96.45%.

Pros

  • Instant Prize symbols run from 1x to 1,000x the bet
  • The Magnet can pull scattered symbols into a cluster
  • Wild Tape doubles as a scatter for the Free Games feature
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • A lower 94.46% version exists, with a 5.54% house edge
  • No volatility label or max win in our catalogue

Verdict

Retro Tapes is a busy cluster slot with several symbol types working together. The headline RTP is 96.47%, a 3.53% house edge, but a 94.46% version is also on record and costs noticeably more per spin. As volatility is not published, run the free demo to see how the Top Charts feature plays before choosing a stake, and look for the RTP shown in the game itself.
