John Hunter and the book of Tut review

This 2020 Pragmatic Play release sends its explorer hero after Egyptian treasure and builds everything around one symbol. The Book of Tut is both the wild and the scatter, so it completes line wins and opens the bonus. In the free spins a randomly chosen symbol can stretch to fill whole reels and pay on any position, and the round can be extended again and again.

One book, two jobs

Wins are paid on paylines from left to right across adjacent reels. The rules in our source do not give the number of lines, so that detail is left out here.

The Book of Tut symbol does double duty. As a wild it substitutes for every symbol, and as a scatter it pays on its own and starts the bonus. Its own paytable rewards three books with 2x the total bet, four with 20x and five with 200x. Five wild symbols pay from that same table.

Free spins with an expanding symbol

Three or more books trigger the round with 10 free spins. Before the first spin, one regular symbol is picked at random to become the special expanding symbol for the whole round.

This is the mechanic that matters. After the normal wins of a free spin are paid, the special symbol grows vertically to cover all 3 positions on each reel where it appears. It then pays according to its own paytable on every reel, even when those reels are not next to each other. The expansion only happens when enough copies are on screen to form a win.

Landing three or more books during the round adds another 10 free spins, and the selected special symbol stays the same. According to the rules there is no cap on the number of retriggers.

Special expanding symbol

Chosen at random before the free spins begin and fixed for the round. When enough copies land to make a win, it expands to fill its reels top to bottom and pays across all reels regardless of adjacency, on top of the normal line wins.

Retriggers

Three or more Book of Tut symbols during the feature add 10 more free spins while keeping the current special symbol. The rules set no limit on how often this can repeat, so a lucky round can run much longer than its starting length.

Buy Free Spins

The round with 10 starting free spins can be bought straight from the base game at 100x the current total bet. It is an expensive shortcut and does not raise the long-run return.

Value check

The game has a single listed RTP of 96.5%, giving a house edge of 3.5%. That works out to about $35 per $1,000 wagered over time. One hundred spins at $1 cost $3.50 on average and at $5 they average $17.50; at $0.20 the expected cost is $0.70.

Our catalogue has no volatility rating and no max win for this title. Pragmatic Play's own page mentions a 5,500x maximum win; we report that as the studio's figure. The bonus design, where a single chosen symbol can cover several full reels, points to a game whose results lean heavily on the free spins.

Where it sits among similar slots

A respin follow-up, John Hunter and the Book of Tut Respin, came out in 2022 at the same 96.5% with a 4,000x cap. Mysterious Egypt from 2020 also lists 96.5% and is rated High. Wild West Gold, from the same year, has 96.51% and a 10,000x ceiling, while Day of Dead from 2021 lists 96.49% and 4,500x.

Is it a fit for you

The rules suit someone who likes a single, clear bonus goal. Base play is mostly about waiting for three books, and the outcome of a feature depends heavily on which symbol the game picks to expand. That makes rounds vary a lot from one to the next. A modest stake and a firm spending limit match that pattern better than chasing a round with larger bets.

Pros

  • Expanding symbol pays on all reels, even non-adjacent ones
  • Unlimited retriggers of 10 extra free spins
  • Book symbol is both wild and scatter, paying up to 200x the total bet
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • No volatility rating or max win in our catalogue
  • Buying the bonus costs 100x the total bet
  • RTP of 96.5% means a 3.5% house edge

Verdict

John Hunter and the Book of Tut keeps its rules compact: a combined wild and scatter, 10 free spins and a randomly picked symbol that expands across full reels and pays anywhere. Unlimited retriggers give the bonus room to grow. The 96.5% RTP is middling for Pragmatic Play, and volatility is not published, with only the studio's 5,500x claim as a ceiling. Use the free demo first and plan for a 3.5% house edge.
