Planet Fortune review
Play'n GO's 2018 space slot is a five-reel, 40-line game in a retro-futuristic setting. A Wild Robot helps complete lines, a random Magnetic Mayhem spin links two reels into one, and three to five robots start a round of free spins where they stay in place. The more unusual fact is in the numbers: the catalogue records five RTP versions, from 96.5% down to 84.49%. The volatility is Medium.
Lines, robots and Magnetic Mayhem
A win comes from lining up three to five matching symbols on any of the 40 lines. The Wild Robot substitutes for any ordinary symbol, which helps complete more combinations.
On any spin the game can trigger an extra Magnetic Mayhem spin. Two adjacent reels then spin in sync and show mega-symbols that are either 2x2 or 3x3 in size. Big symbols fill more positions on those two reels, so they can help build larger wins.
Free spins with sticky robots
Hitting three to five Wild Robots anywhere on the reels triggers a sequence of 10 free spins. During the round the robots stay in place until, as the studio puts it, their batteries need recharging. The studio does not state the exact recharge rule in the text we hold, so this review does not describe it.
Five RTP versions
Planet Fortune has five RTP versions on record: 96.5%, 94.49%, 91.5%, 87.49% and 84.49%. The headline version has a house edge of 3.5%. The others have house edges of 5.51%, 8.5%, 12.51% and 15.51%.
The gap in cost is large. Per $1,000 wagered, the five versions lose about $35, $55.10, $85, $125.10 and $155.10 on average. At the headline RTP, 100 spins cost about $0.70 at a $0.20 bet, $3.50 at $1 and $17.50 at $5. At the lowest version the same sessions cost $3.10, $15.51 and $77.55, more than four times as much.
Because the lowest version costs so much more, it is worth checking the game's own information screen to see which version is running before you play. Our data does not say which one a given player will meet.
Volatility, max win and comparable games
The catalogue labels the game Medium volatility and does not publish a max win, and the studio text gives none. The Medium label points to swings that are moderate rather than extreme, though it does not change the house edge.
Games with a near-identical profile are Hugo Goal (96.5%, 2018), Sweet Alchemy (96.52%, 2018), Cops 'n' Robbers (96.46%, 2018), Banana Rock (96.6%, 2018), Mermaid's Diamond (96.5%, 2017) and Perfect Gems (96.5%, 2019). All are Medium.
Pros
- Medium volatility label
- 96.5% headline RTP with a 3.5% house edge
- Robots stay in place during the 10 free spins
- Free official demo available
Cons
- Four lower RTP versions exist, down to 84.49%
- No max win published
- The studio text does not say how long the robots stay in the free spins
Verdict
Planet Fortune is a straightforward 40-line slot with a few features, and its Medium volatility makes the maths easier to follow than most. The 96.5% RTP is a fair headline, but the existence of versions down to 84.49% is the key warning: the same game can cost over four times as much. Check the version, treat it as paid entertainment, and try the free demo first.
