Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness review
Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness, usually shortened to Tome of Madness, moves the Book of Dead hero out of Egypt and into the world of Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos. Instead of paylines and expanding books, Play'n GO built a 5x5 cascading grid where clusters pay and every win feeds a portal. The more symbols the portal swallows, the stranger the effects that fire on the board.
A cluster grid with a portal attached
A standard win needs a cluster of four or more matching symbols on the 5x5 grid. Winning symbols drop out and new ones fall in, so one paid spin can contain several wins in a row.
What sets it apart is the portal. Each winning cluster adds charge, and the number of symbols that have gone into the portal decides what happens next. This turns the game into a progress bar: the longer a cascade chain runs, the closer the board gets to its stronger effects.
Wilds and portal stages
Two kinds of wild help build clusters. The studio describes the portal as a ladder of thresholds, each one adding something new to the board.
Special Wild (Tome of Madness)
The Necronomicon itself acts as a wild that can stand in for every high-paying and low-paying symbol, so it can join almost any cluster on the grid.
Rich Wilde multiplier wild
Rich Wilde replaces the high-paying symbols only, and he doubles the value of any win he joins. He is narrower than the Special Wild but carries the multiplier.
Seven and 14 symbols
At seven charged symbols, two Special Wilds replace two random symbols on the grid. At 14, the same happens, and if those wilds sit inside winning clusters the Abyss effect fires. Abyss clears every symbol in the wild's row or column and feeds them into the portal.
27 symbols and the Void
At 27 charged symbols, two Special Wilds again land on random positions. If they are part of winning clusters, the Void effect picks one high-paying or low-paying symbol and removes every copy from the grid, which also adds to the portal charge.
The Other World round
Charging the grid with 42 winning symbols opens the portal fully and starts a free round called Other World. During it, up to three different effects can take place. For every three symbols collected above the 42 that opened the round, another portal effect is added.
The studio text we have cuts off before it states a cap on those extra effects, so none is quoted here. What can be said is that the design rewards long chains: the 42-symbol target sits well above the earlier stages, and each stage has to be reached inside a single game round.
Maths and cost of play
Five RTP versions are on record: 96.59%, 94.52%, 91.59%, 87.52% and 84.5%. Their house edges are 3.41%, 5.48%, 8.41%, 12.48% and 15.5%. Per $1,000 wagered, the best version costs $34.10 on average and the weakest $155. That is a big spread for the same game, so the version in use matters.
A 100-spin session at $0.20 costs about $0.68 on the best version and $3.10 on the weakest. At $1 a spin the figures are $3.41 and $15.50, and at $5 a spin, $17.05 and $77.50. Volatility is Medium, and the studio's max win is not published in our catalogue.
Similar numbers elsewhere
Several 2019 games sit close on paper: Golden Colts at 96.55%, Chronos Joker at 96.54%, Demon and Mission Cash at 96.51%, Perfect Gems at 96.5% and Cash Vandal at 96.47%, all rated Medium. If the figures are what you compare, none of them changes the picture much; the portal is what separates this release.
Pros
- Portal stages at seven, 14, 27 and 42 symbols give a clear progression inside every round
- Two wild types: one covers all paying symbols, the other doubles wins
- Medium volatility with a headline RTP of 96.59%
- Free official demo available
Cons
- Five RTP versions down to 84.5%, so the same game can cost much more per session
- No max win published, which makes the ceiling hard to judge
- The strongest effects need long cascade chains inside one round
Verdict
Tome of Madness is a cluster slot built around one idea: wins charge a portal, and the portal escalates through four thresholds up to the Other World round. At 96.59% RTP and Medium volatility the headline version is competitive, but the 3.41% house edge climbs to 15.5% on the weakest version. Treat it as paid entertainment, check which RTP version is running, and try the free demo to see how often chains get far enough to matter.
