Rich Wilde and the Tome of Insanity review

Rich Wilde and the Tome of Insanity, usually shortened to Tome of Insanity, turns the explorer's adventures towards cosmic horror. Rich has found another Necronomicon and must outrun the Nameless Mist and the spawn of Yog-Sothoth. Play'n GO built the 2024 release on a 5x5 grid, with a map beside it and a portal that charges as symbols win. The more interesting detail is the maths: five RTP versions are on record.

The story and the grid

Play'n GO sets the scene as a chase. Rich Wilde carries his most valuable haul of artefacts and wants to keep the tome away from the ancient deity's brood. You follow him by spinning a 5x5 grid and working through the bonus features the studio describes, while a separate map on the left of the grid tracks several of them.

The studio text mentions winning clusters, so wins are tied to groups of symbols rather than classic paylines. It does not give the minimum cluster size or the paytable in the material we have, and we leave those details out.

The three main features

Each feature works through the map or the portal next to the grid, so the screen beside the reels matters as much as the reels themselves.

All-Seeing Eye

On any spin an Eye Frame can appear on the map beside the grid. If winning clusters form on the grid in relation to that frame, two to four Wild symbols are placed on the grid. The studio notes that this can set off unexpected cascading combinations, so a single trigger may chain into several wins.

Portal of Chaos

Every win charges the portal by one per symbol. It has four levels, at 8, 16, 30 and 48 charges. The first grants two to four Wilds, the second can eliminate symbols, the third can upgrade low-paying symbols into more valuable ones, and the last awards a Free Spin with all earlier effects included. The portal can also be overcharged for seven additional effects, each needing four more winning symbols.

Damned Ritual

The map can light up with red and green eyes, which are activated by winning combinations on the marked positions. Triggering 12 red eyes summons Yog-Sothoth as a 2x2 mega wild, played in a 3-step sequence. Activating three, four or five green eyes applies a x2, x3 or x4 win multiplier to that mega symbol, and remaining portal effects grant four Wilds during the summoning.

How the free spin and bonus path fits together

The one bonus route the studio spells out is the top portal level, which awards a Free Spin with all the earlier effects attached. The material we have gives no separate scatter rules, so we cannot say whether other routes exist.

The design rewards winning chains. Charging the portal needs symbols to win, and the Eye Frame needs clusters at the right map positions. Stretches without wins therefore add little to either meter, which fits the High volatility rating.

RTP versions and cost

This is a game where the version you open matters. The listed RTP of 96.2% (house edge 3.8%) is the top figure. Four lower versions exist: 94.2% (5.8%), 91.2% (8.8%), 87.2% (12.8%) and 84.2%, a house edge of 15.8%.

Per $1,000 wagered the average loss is $38 at 96.2% and $158 at 84.2%. A 100-spin session at $1 costs $3.80 on the best version and $15.80 on the worst. At $5 per spin, $500 in total, the range is $19 to $79. At $0.20 it is $0.76 to $3.16. The max win is not published in our catalogue.

Similar releases

Play'n GO's other 2024 titles in the High group all show the same 96.2% headline RTP: Ankh of Anubis Awakening, Baron: Lord of Saturday, Cat Wilde and the Incan Quest, Colt Lightning Firestorm, Fulong 88 and Sobek's Godly Spins. On numbers alone they are interchangeable, so the choice comes down to mechanics.

Pros

  • Three linked features: Eye Frame Wilds, a four-level portal and the Damned Ritual
  • The portal ladder ends in a Free Spin with all earlier effects included
  • Headline RTP of 96.2% with a 3.8% house edge
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • Five RTP versions down to 84.2%, with a house edge of 15.8% on the lowest
  • Max win is not published in our catalogue
  • High volatility means long stretches without the portal paying off

Verdict

Tome of Insanity is a feature-heavy cluster game with a portal that charges at 8, 16, 30 and 48 and a mega wild summoned by red eyes on the map. The 96.2% RTP is standard for Play'n GO, but the lower versions go as far as 84.2%, so check which one you are playing. The volatility is High and no max win is listed. Use the demo to learn the map before spending money.
