Big Bass Secrets of the Golden Lake review

Pragmatic Play gives its fishing series a card-picking twist in this 2024 release. The free spins do not simply start: a choice from twelve cards decides whether the classic round or the Golden Lake round is played, and either one can also be bought outright. Cash values sit on money symbols, a fisherman wild gathers them, and the official rules list a ladder of values that tops out at 5,000x the bet, which is also the cap on any single win.

How a spin pays

This is a payline game. The rules describe wins that run from left to right on adjacent reels, with no cascades, no expanding reels and no pay-anywhere counting. The rules summary we hold gives neither a payline count nor a grid size, so we leave both out rather than guess.

The base game is not only about line wins. Its real job is to get you to the free spins, and the studio has built in a small helper for near misses, described below.

Scatters, near misses and the card pick

Three, four or five scatters start the free spins with 10, 15 or 20 spins respectively. When only two scatters land in the base game, a random feature may bring in a third. In one version, scatters that can drop one position without leaving the reel area do so, and the reels without scatters respin. The rules describe further random helpers of this kind, but the text we hold is cut off, so we do not list them.

Before the round starts there is a selection of twelve cards. The studio says two of them open the Golden Lake free spins, an upgraded mode meant to raise the size of wins. The other cards lead to the classic mode. The card pick is therefore a lottery of its own, sitting between the trigger and the first free spin.

Money Symbol

Money symbols take a random cash value on every spin, and those values can be won during the free spins. The listed values are 2x, 5x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 100x, 200x, 500x, 1666x, 2500x and 5000x the total bet. Most of the ladder is small to mid-sized, while the top steps match the game's win cap.

Fisherman Wild

The fisherman wild can land on all reels during the free spins. It substitutes for every symbol except the scatter and the money symbol. It is also the collector: when more than one fisherman lands in either mode, all the collected values are added to the total win.

Ante bet and bonus buy

The game offers two ways to change how often the bonus appears. They are mutually exclusive, so it helps to know which is which.

Ante Bet

The bet multiplier can be set to 15x instead of the normal 10x. At the higher setting more scatters sit on the reels, so the free spins arrive more often naturally, and the Buy Free Spins option is switched off. The rules also say three scatters can be added in random positions at the end of certain spins.

Buy Free Spins

Two purchases exist. For 100x the total bet you trigger the free spins and then pick one of twelve cards, which decides between the regular and Golden Lake modes. For 270x the total bet you go straight into the Golden Lake round with no card pick. The second price is the way to skip the lottery of the cards.

What the numbers say

Only one RTP version is on record: 96.07%, a house edge of 3.93%. Over a long run that works out at about $39.30 lost for every $1,000 wagered. Our catalogue does not publish a volatility label for the game.

A short session looks like this on average: 100 spins at $0.20 cost $0.79, at $1 they cost $3.93, and at $5 (so $500 wagered) they cost $19.65. The maximum win is 5,000x the bet, which equals $1,000 at a $0.20 bet, $5,000 at $1 and $25,000 at $5. The top money symbol value and the win cap are the same figure.

Close relatives and alternatives

Big Bass Floats My Boat, also from 2024, carries the same 96.07% RTP and the same 5,000x cap. Among other Pragmatic Play titles with similar numbers, Cash Box lists 96.02% with 5,000x, Demon Pots 96.01% with 6,000x and Cleocatra 96.2% with 5,000x. Tiny Toads, from 2024, offers a higher 96.51% RTP with a 4,000x cap.

Pros

  • Twelve-card pick adds a second layer of chance before the free spins start
  • Two ways to buy the bonus, at 100x or 270x the total bet
  • Money values reach 5,000x the bet, matching the win cap
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • Ante bet switches off the Buy Free Spins option
  • No volatility label in our catalogue, and no payline count in the rules we hold
  • The 96.07% RTP leaves a 3.93% house edge, and the bonus buy prices are high relative to the bet

Verdict

Big Bass Secrets of the Golden Lake is a bonus-led payline slot: lines pay in the base game, but the money symbols and the fisherman wild do the heavy lifting in the free spins. The 96.07% RTP is a single listed figure and no volatility rating is published, so judge the swings in the demo. Treat it as paid entertainment with a 3.93% house edge, and note that buying the round at 100x or 270x the bet only moves the cost forward.
