Reel Rush review
The grid in Reel Rush starts small and grows with every win. NetEnt's 2013 release opens with a diamond-shaped layout of 1, 3, 5, 3 and 1 positions and 45 ways, and each winning re-spin opens two more spaces. Reach the fifth re-spin with a win and the reward is 8 free spins on a full 5x5 board with 3,125 ways. Bright colours and a deliberately odd mix of elements frame what is really a growth mechanic.
From 45 ways to 3,125
In its starting shape the game counts 45 ways to win. The outer reels show one position, the second and fourth show three, and the middle reel shows five. Every new open position adds routes across the reels, which is why the number of ways climbs so quickly as the shape fills out.
The full 5x5 grid, used in the free spins, gives 3,125 ways. Between those two ends sit the re-spin stages, each one a little wider than the last.
Re-spins
A win earns a re-spin, and up to five re-spins can be won in a row. During each one, two new positions open on the reels in a puff of cloud and reveal two extra symbols. These added positions raise the number of ways, so each step makes the next win a little more likely than the last.
Free spins
If the fifth and final re-spin contains a winning combination, 8 free spins are awarded. They are played on five reels and five rows, the largest version of the grid, with all 3,125 ways active from the first spin, so the round skips the gradual widening of the main game.
Wild
The wild can appear on reels 2 to 5 in both the main game and the free spins and substitutes for all symbols. When it completes a win, the star on the symbol spins and glows. It never lands on the first reel, so that reel always needs a regular symbol.
Why the chain matters
The free spins are not triggered by scatters. They are earned by keeping a winning chain alive through five re-spins, which means the bonus depends on a run of connected wins rather than on one lucky spin. Most chains will stop early. When one does go the distance, the round that follows is played on the largest grid with no build-up needed.
This structure also explains the 28% hit frequency NetEnt lists: wins of some size appear on a little over a quarter of spins on average, and each one is a doorway to the next stage.
RTP and money
The single RTP of 96.96% leaves a house edge of 3.04%, about $30.40 per $1,000 wagered on average.
Volatility is rated Medium and the max payout is 1,000x the bet. That is $200 at $0.20, $1,000 at $1 and $5,000 at $5. A hundred spins cost $0.61, $3.04 and $15.20 on average at those three stakes.
Sequels and Medium-volatility neighbours
Reel Rush 2 lists 96.58% with High volatility and a 4,800x ceiling, while Reel Rush XXXtreme lists 96.06%, Very high volatility and 8,130x. Both take the idea toward bigger swings. With closer numbers to the original, Steam Tower and Hotline both list 97.04% and Medium volatility, and Space Wars lists 96.75% with the same 1,000x cap.
Pros
- A growing grid makes every win part of a longer chain
- Free spins on the full 3,125-way board
- 28% hit frequency for a Medium volatility game
Cons
- Reaching the free spins needs five winning re-spins in a row
- 1,000x max win is modest next to the sequels
- No free demo listed in our data
Verdict
Reel Rush turns each win into a step: two new positions per re-spin, five steps to a free spins round on a 3,125-way grid. The 96.96% RTP is strong, and Medium volatility with a 28% hit rate keeps sessions steadier than its sequels. The 1,000x cap limits the top end. With a 3.04% house edge, it remains paid entertainment, best played on a set budget.
