Wild Frames review
Wild Frames takes a classic casino theme in the Las Vegas style and runs it on a modern cluster grid. Instead of paylines, groups of five or more matching symbols pay, then vanish and let new ones drop in. The twist is in the wilds: each one leaves a sticky frame behind, and a meter that fills as symbols disappear can unlock three escalating tricks.
How a spin pays
You need a cluster of five or more connected symbols to win. Once a cluster pays it is removed, and symbols above fall into the gaps. That can set off a chain of further clusters inside the same paid spin.
The studio presents the theme as old-style casino symbols mixed with newer mechanics. In practice that means the base game is the cascade, and everything else in the design hangs off the wilds and the meter.
Frames and random wilds
Wilds are the centre of the design, and they behave differently from the plain substitute symbols in many older slots.
Frames
When a wild lands, it creates a frame on its position. The frame becomes sticky and stays on the grid until every cascade has finished and a new spin begins. If another wild later drops onto an existing frame, it receives a multiplier upgrade, and that multiplier is added to any cluster the wild becomes part of.
Random Wilds
A spin that pays nothing can still produce something. On a non-winning spin, four to six wilds can be added to the grid at random. The studio calls this a potentially game-changing feature, though it describes a chance, not a fixed outcome.
The charge meter
Every symbol that disappears adds one point to the Charge Meter. Three thresholds award a different feature, always in the same order. The meter resets after each spin, so the build-up is only ever about a single paid round and its cascades.
Transform at 20
At 20 charges, all high-paying symbols on the grid are turned into one specific high-paying type. With the high-paying symbols all alike, the studio says this can reward a huge cluster.
Wildcard at 40
At 40 charges, between three and six wilds are added to the grid. Because wilds connect different symbols, the studio notes that they can join groups that were not linked before and so create bigger clusters.
Shatter at 60
At 60 charges, every low-paying symbol is removed from the grid and a new cascade starts, which can leave the board to the higher-paying symbols.
What the numbers say
There are five RTP versions: 96.5%, 94.5%, 91.5%, 87.5% and 84.5%. The house edge runs from 3.5% on the best to 15.5% on the weakest. For every $1,000 wagered, that means an average cost of $35 at the top and $155 at the bottom.
Over 100 spins at $1, the average loss is $3.50 on the headline version and $15.50 on the lowest. Stakes of $0.20 give $0.70 and $3.10, while $5 spins give $17.50 and $77.50. Volatility is High, and no max win is published in our catalogue, so there is no stated ceiling to plan around.
Where it sits among 2019 releases
Big Win 777, Black Mamba, Phoenix Reborn, Sabaton and Xmas Magic share its 96.5% RTP and High rating, and Divine Showdown is a hair higher at 96.51%. With so many near-identical figures, the choice comes down to mechanics: this one is the frame-and-meter design.
Pros
- Sticky frames let one wild keep working through a whole cascade chain
- Charge meter gives three clear stages at 20, 40 and 60 charges
- Four to six random wilds can appear even on a non-winning spin
- Free official demo available
Cons
- High volatility means long stretches without a large win are normal
- RTP drops to 84.5% on the weakest of five versions
- No max win is published, so the ceiling is unclear
Verdict
Wild Frames is a compact, mechanical slot: clusters of five pay, wilds leave sticky frames, and a meter that resets every spin hands out Transform, Wildcard and Shatter. The headline RTP of 96.5% and High volatility put it in line with many other 2019 titles, and the house edge of 3.5% rises quickly on lower versions. It suits players who like watching a cascade build, ideally after a look at the free demo.
