RAGE review

RAGE puts four fantasy fighters on the reels and lets them grow. In this 2024 NetEnt release, a Barbarian, an Assassin, an Archer and a Sorceress can appear as 2x2 Colossal Symbols on the first two reels, and every win that involves one of those giants holds the reels for a respin. The result is a game about streaks: one connected win can lead to the next, and in the free spins those streaks can leave sticky wilds behind.

An uneven grid

The studio lists the layout as 5x4 with a twist: reels 1 and 2 show two positions each, while reels 3, 4 and 5 show four. That shape exists for the Colossal Symbols, which fill the whole visible area of the first two reels as one 2x2 block. NetEnt gives 256 as the line count and a stake range of €0.25 to €250.

Because the first two reels are so short, a single Colossal Symbol there already covers the start of every possible win. What the remaining three reels add decides how far a combination reaches.

Colossal Symbols and the respin chain

Three kinds of symbol can appear in the oversized 2x2 form: the high-paying characters, the scatter, and combined symbols. Combined symbols only ever exist as Colossal Symbols, and each one merges either two different high-paying characters or all four of them into a single block.

The respin rule is what turns a hit into a sequence. Any win that includes a Colossal Symbol, in the main game or in the free spins, triggers a respin in which that Colossal Symbol stays put and all wins so far are kept. Each new symbol matching it on the other reels earns another respin; once none land, the feature stops and play moves on.

Colossal Symbols

High-paying characters, combined symbols and scatters can land as 2x2 blocks covering reels 1 and 2. Combined symbols appear only in this size and count as two or four different characters at once, which widens the set of symbols that can connect with the reels to the right.

Respins

Started by any winning combination that uses a Colossal Symbol. The giant stays on the reels and existing wins are held for the next spin. Every matching symbol that lands awards further respins, and the chain closes as soon as a respin brings no match.

Scatter Mini Game

Main game only. A Colossal Treasure Chest scatter on reels 1 and 2 grants a free extra spin in which only reels 3, 4 and 5 move and can show nothing but scatters. The chest counts as 4 scatters, and the total decides how many free spins are awarded.

Sticky Wilds

A free spins feature. When a respin sequence ends, symbols on reels 3, 4 and 5 that match the Colossal Symbol may occasionally transform into wilds that stay locked in place until the free spins are over, so later spins of the round inherit them.

Free spins and the buy option

The free spins come out of the Scatter Mini Game, where the number of scatters revealed sets the size of the round. The studio page does not state the exact spin counts, so none are quoted here. Inside the round the respin chain works as before, with the added chance that matching symbols turn into Sticky Wilds that last until the end.

For players who would rather skip the wait, the studio offers a Buy Feature that opens the free spins for 80x the stake, which is $80 at a $1 bet. It is a faster way into the round at a fixed price, not a cheaper one, and the outcome of the round is just as uncertain.

Return, risk and money

The catalogue lists one RTP, 96.08%, for a house edge of 3.92%. Across a very long run that works out to about $39.20 per $1,000 staked. In session terms, 100 spins average a cost of $0.78 at $0.20, $3.92 at $1 and $19.60 at $5.

Volatility is rated High, and the studio's hit frequency of 26% means roughly one spin in four lands any win at all. The cap is 1,800x the bet, which is $360 at $0.20, $1,800 at $1 and $9,000 at $5. That ceiling sits on the modest side for a High rating, which suggests the swings come more from how often the bonus lands than from one enormous top prize.

Rage of the Seas and similar numbers

The catalogue counts one related title, Rage of the Seas, at 96.04% with a Very high rating and a 2,000x cap. Games with close figures include Double Stacks at 96.1% and 1,700x, Dark King: Forbidden Riches at 96.06% and 1,600x, and Golden Egg Invaders at 96.13% with a 2,200x maximum, all rated High.

Pros

  • Any win with a Colossal Symbol starts a respin chain that keeps wins and the giant symbol
  • Combined Colossal Symbols count as two or four characters at once
  • Sticky Wilds can carry over for the rest of the free spins
  • A 96.08% RTP with a Buy Feature at a fixed 80x

Cons

  • A 26% hit frequency means most spins return nothing
  • Free spin counts are not stated on the studio page we used
  • The 1,800x cap is limited for a High volatility game

Verdict

RAGE is built around one strong idea: oversized characters on the first two reels that hold the grid for respins whenever they connect. The 96.08% RTP leaves a 3.92% house edge, the High volatility and 26% hit frequency point to long dry spells, and the 1,800x ceiling is moderate. It suits players who enjoy chain mechanics and accept uneven sessions. Keep the stake within a budget you set in advance.
