Reef Raider review
Reef Raider is an undersea cluster slot from NetEnt, released in 2021 on a 7x7 grid. Winning clusters are removed and replaced by Avalanche, but the more interesting part is the Treasure Trail around the reels. Clam Wilds that get used up charge a 15-bar meter, and five thresholds along it each unlock a different feature, the last one being free spins. With a 33% hit frequency and an 8,700x ceiling, it pairs frequent small action with a high top end.
Cluster wins and the Clam Wild
Symbols pay in clusters on a 7x7 board. After a win, the winning symbols leave and new ones tumble in, which the studio calls Avalanche. A further twist applies to clusters that contain at least 3 medium-win or low-win symbols: a Clam Wild appears in place of one of the removed symbols before the new ones fall, giving the next drop a better chance of connecting.
That Clam Wild matters beyond the spin it appears in. Each time one is removed through a cluster win, one bar of the Treasure Trail is charged.
The Treasure Trail
The trail runs around the reels and has 15 meter bars. Bars can also be filled during free spins. Reaching a threshold triggers its feature, in this order: 3 bars, 6 bars, 9 bars, 12 bars and 15 bars. The first four are described below, and the fifth starts the free spins.
Anchor Drop (3 bars)
In the main game or in free spins, the game picks 1 to 3 different low-win symbols at random and removes every matching symbol from the play area, making room for new ones to fall.
Random Wilds (6 bars)
Between 4 and 8 Wild Coin symbols are placed at random positions on the reels, which gives the board extra substitutes.
Mystery Chest (9 bars)
Between 2 and 16 medium-win and low-win symbols are replaced with Mystery symbols. Once the feature has been activated, all Mystery symbols are revealed and any cluster wins are then evaluated.
Cannon Blast (12 bars)
A random symbol is removed, together with all the medium-win and low-win symbols in its row and column. Clam Wild, Wild Coin and Multiplier symbols cannot be removed by it.
Free spins at 15 bars
Fifteen or more charged bars in the main game award the free spins round. The studio's text we hold is cut off before it gives the spin count, so check the in-game help or the demo for that number. What the rules do confirm is that the meter can be filled again during the round, and that Anchor Drop and Mystery Chest can fire there too.
RTP, volatility and cost
Reef Raider has a single RTP of 96.1%, a house edge of 3.9%. Over a long run, $1,000 wagered costs about $39. Volatility is Very high and the hit frequency is 33%, so about one spin in three shows some kind of win. How large those wins are is a separate question, and the Very high rating points to large gaps between the big ones.
The max win is 8,700x the bet, or $1,740 at $0.20, $8,700 at $1 and $43,500 at $5. For shorter sessions, 100 spins at $0.20 cost $0.78 on average, 100 spins at $1 cost $3.90 and 100 spins at $5 cost $19.50.
Comparable Very high volatility titles
Among games with similar numbers, Silverback Gold lists 96.11% and a 9,300x max win, and Reel Rush XXXtreme 96.06% and 8,130x. Twin Spin XXXtreme reaches 9,600x at 96.06%. Space Wars 2 Powerpoints and Demon Beats both list 10,000x, at 96.1% and 96.08%, and Pandora's Treasure tops the group at 10,368x with 96.13%.
Pros
- Five trail thresholds turn cluster wins into a visible progress goal
- 33% hit frequency
- Treasure Trail meter keeps charging during free spins
- Free official demo available
Cons
- Very high volatility, so a high hit rate does not mean steady returns
- The free spin count is not stated in the text available to us
- Only one RTP version, 96.1%, so no higher-return alternative
Verdict
Reef Raider gives each cluster win a second job: charging the Treasure Trail until the free spins arrive. The structure is easy to follow, with thresholds at 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 bars. At 96.1% and Very high volatility, with an 8,700x max win, it fits players who accept swings. The house edge is 3.9%, so set the stake low and use the free demo first.
