Rage of the Seas review

Most of the story in Rage of the Seas is told by the grid. NetEnt's 2020 pirate slot starts as a five-reel, four-row game with 1,024 ways, and a Boost symbol can grow the middle reels to seven rows, lifting the count of ways up to 5,488. Every expansion also starts Feature Spins and switches on one of five random features. The catalogue rates it Very high volatility, with a 2,000x top prize.

From 1,024 to 5,488 ways

The game begins with 1,024 ways. Expanding one reel gives a total of 1,792 ways, two reels give 3,136 and three reels reach 5,488. The layout is described as 5-reel, 4-row, expandable to 4-7-7-7-4 rows. Bets run from €0.20 to €400.00.

Only reels 2, 3 and 4 can expand. That means the three reels in the middle carry the growth, while the outer reels stay at four rows.

The Boost symbol and Feature Spins

A Boost symbol landing on reel 2, 3 or 4 expands that reel to seven rows and starts 4 Feature Spins. At the same time, one of five Random Features is switched on from the next spin. The details change as more Boost symbols arrive:

A Boost on an expanded reel

If another Boost symbol lands on a reel that is already expanded, 2 extra Feature Spins are activated. When this happens in the Free Spins, the reward is 2 Extra Free Spins instead.

A Boost on a new reel

If a Boost symbol lands on a reel that has not yet expanded, the reel grows to seven rows, 4 extra Feature Spins are added and 1 new Random Feature is activated for the remaining spins.

The third Boost

When a third Boost symbol is collected on reels 2, 3 or 4, the reel expands and Free Spins are awarded.

The five random features

The studio lists five features, and the Boost symbol selects from them.

Spreading Wild

It can land anywhere on reels 2, 3 and 4 and then sticks up to two Spreading Wilds onto adjacent positions, covering the original symbols. It does not spread onto reels 1 and 5.

Stacked Wild

Stacks of wilds can appear anywhere on reels 2, 3 and 4 and cover from 1 to 4 positions.

Major and Minor Reel Upgrades

The Major upgrade removes all Anchor and Barrel symbols from the reels, and the Minor upgrade removes all Steering Wheel and Bottle symbols. In both cases the studio says the removal makes way for possible bigger wins.

x2 Multiplier

Bet way wins are multiplied by x2.

Free spins and the maths

At least 3 Scatter symbols expand the reels and activate Free Spins; three scatters award 5. The studio text we have is cut off after that, so we cannot give the counts for four or five scatters.

Rage of the Seas has one RTP on record, 96.04%, a house edge of 3.96%. That is about $39.60 lost per $1,000 wagered over a long run. A 100-spin session costs about $0.79 at a $0.20 bet, $3.96 at $1 and $19.80 at $5. The hit frequency is 28%. The maximum win is 2,000x the bet: $400 at $0.20, $2,000 at $1 and $10,000 at $5.

The series and alternatives

The catalogue lists one related title, RAGE from 2024, with a 96.08% RTP, High volatility and a 1,800x max win. For similar numbers, Mermaids lists 96.09% and 2,007x, and Gorilla Kingdom 96.03% and 1,700x. Cashomatic lists 96.33% and 2,200x, Druid's Magic 96.14% and 2,983x, Don't Eat the Candy 96.13% and 3,110x, and Funk Master 96.04% and 3,300x. All are Very high.

Pros

  • Reels grow from 1,024 to as many as 5,488 ways
  • Five random features, including stacked and spreading wilds and a x2 multiplier
  • Hit frequency of 28% and a max win of 2,000x
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • Very high volatility with a 3.96% house edge
  • Free spins counts for four or five scatters are not available to us
  • The features are random, so you cannot choose which one is active

Verdict

Rage of the Seas is a slot that is mostly about growth: expanding reels, Feature Spins and one of five random features at a time. The 96.04% RTP and Very high volatility mean a 3.96% house edge and uneven results, with 2,000x as the ceiling. Because the mechanics are layered, the free demo is the best way to learn how the Boost symbols behave before staking any money.
