Rome: The Golden Age review
NetEnt built this slot around collecting rather than lining up symbols. Golden Age symbols mark positions with frames, frames can turn into wilds, and the same symbol feeds a meter that raises a free spins multiplier. The 2021 release uses a 5-reel layout with uneven reel heights, and the free spins round works unlike most: every position on the grid spins on its own. With Very high volatility and a 19,000x ceiling, it is a feature-driven game.
Frames, Rome symbols and the wilds they make
The grid is 5x5 with reel heights of 3, 4, 5, 4 and 3, and up to 20 paylines. The interest is in what happens around the Golden Age symbol.
Each time a Golden Age symbol lands, its position is marked with a frame. If that symbol then transforms into a Rome symbol, the frame becomes an Active Frame. On the next spin, the Rome symbol and every framed position next to it turn into wilds. The effect is a wild patch that spreads across connected frames, so the more frames sit together, the larger the patch can be.
Frames
A Golden Age symbol leaves a frame on its position. A frame that belongs to a Rome symbol becomes active, and active frames plus the Rome symbol itself become wilds on the following spin.
The meter that feeds the free spins
In the main game, every Golden Age symbol adds 1 to 4 points to a collect meter. Each time the meter reaches 200 points, the free spins multiplier is upgraded. The studio gives the highest value as 1,000x, and it is applied at the end of the free spins to boost the total win.
That detail matters when reading the game: the multiplier is built during base play but only pays out inside the bonus. Spins that collect points without triggering anything are therefore still moving the bonus forward.
Free Spins with independent positions
Three scatters on reels 2, 3 and 4 start the round. Before the spins begin, any frame or Active Frame that did not turn into a wild becomes locked. These locked positions stay on the reels and each pays a random prize between 0.5x and 50x the bet when the round ends.
During the spins, each reel position spins individually. When a Rome symbol lands on an unlocked position, the free spins counter resets to 3, a random prize between 0.5x and 50x is awarded and that position locks. If every position becomes locked, the round ends at once and all prizes from Rome symbols receive an extra 2x multiplier.
Counter reset
Each Rome symbol on an unlocked position sets the counter back to 3, so the round lasts as long as new Rome symbols keep appearing.
Full-grid finish
Locking every position ends the round immediately, and the Rome prizes are doubled.
Cost and ceiling
Rome: The Golden Age lists one RTP, 96.06%, a house edge of 3.94%. That is about $39.40 lost per $1,000 wagered over a long run. A 100-spin session costs $0.79 on average at $0.20, $3.94 at $1 and $19.70 at $5.
The max win is 19,000x the bet: $3,800 at $0.20, $19,000 at $1 and $95,000 at $5. The studio lists a hit frequency of 18%. Combined with Very high volatility, that suggests long stretches without a win, with bets between €0.10 and €50.00.
Games with matching numbers
Wonders of Christmas shares both the 96.06% RTP and the 19,000x max win. Jelly Belly Megaways lists 96.08% with 20,000x, and Beach Invaders 96.09% with 20,847x. Starburst Galaxy sits at 96% with 17,288x, and Gonzo's Quest II: Return to El Dorado shows 96.06% with 15,825x. All of them are rated Very high.
Pros
- Free spins multiplier can rise to 1,000x through the collect meter
- Rome prizes in the free spins range from 0.5x to 50x the bet
- Max win of 19,000x the bet
- Frames create wild patches in the base game
Cons
- An 18% hit frequency points to long stretches without wins
- Very high volatility, and the big multiplier only applies in the free spins
- The frame and lock system takes a few rounds to read
Verdict
Rome: The Golden Age rewards patience: the base game is about collecting frames and meter points, and the free spins turn that into locked prizes and a final multiplier. The 96.06% RTP means a 3.94% house edge, and the Very high volatility with an 18% hit frequency makes for uneven sessions. It suits players who like layered mechanics and accept dry runs. The cost is real, around $39.40 per $1,000, so set a budget first.
