Twin Spin Megaways review
Twin Spin Megaways takes the linked reels of NetEnt's 2013 Twin Spin and puts them on a six-reel Megaways grid. Two or more neighbouring reels turn identical at the start of each spin, and every winning combination starts an avalanche. The result is a Las Vegas look with a very different engine under it. The catalogue rates it Very high volatility, with a hit frequency of 35% and a max win of 4,900x.
Megaways, twin reels and avalanches
Each spin places between two and seven symbols on every reel. The number of ways is the product of those counts, with a ceiling of 117,649. Three matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left make a win, and extra matching symbols extend the longest combination.
The twin reels are the signature. At the start of each spin, two or more adjacent reels are chosen at random to be identical and linked for the whole spin. In free spins the twin reels always hold seven symbols each, which pushes the number of ways up.
Avalanche
A winning combination removes its symbols and opens space for a fresh drop. Symbols fall into place rather than spin. The studio says different symbols can appear on the twin reels during an avalanche, so the link is fixed at the start of the spin but the symbols need not match through the whole chain.
Free spins with wild multipliers
Five scatters in the main game activate 15 free spins. Five scatters inside the round add 15 more. If more than five land, each extra scatter brings one additional free spin.
During the round, wilds can carry a 2x or 3x multiplier. The studio describes this as increasing the frequency of winning symbols on the reel by that factor. Note the wording: it speaks of winning symbols on the reel, not of a bonus applied to the final win.
The maths of the base game
A 96.04% RTP gives a 3.96% house edge, or about $39.60 lost per $1,000 wagered. For 100 spins, the average cost is $0.79 at $0.20, $3.96 at $1 and $19.80 at $5.
The 35% hit frequency sits alongside a Very high label, which suggests that wins arrive often while the larger outcomes are rare. The max win is 4,900x, or $980 at $0.20, $4,900 at $1 and $24,500 at $5. Stakes run from 0.10 to 100.00 euros. No free demo is listed.
Against the 2013 original and other Megaways games
The original Twin Spin lists 96.55% RTP, High volatility and a 1,000x max win. The Megaways version has a lower RTP, a 4,900x ceiling and a higher volatility band.
Other Very high Megaways titles at similar RTPs reach much further: Wild Turkey Megaways lists 7,239x, Dazzle Me Megaways 13,400x, Mummy Megaways 16,321x and The Wish Master Megaways 27,018x. By that measure, 4,900x is a lower ceiling for the same rating.
Pros
- 35% hit frequency, so paying spins are common
- Twin reels and avalanches work together on a 117,649-way grid
- Five scatters in the bonus add 15 more free spins
- Max win of 4,900x, or $24,500 at a $5 bet
Cons
- Very high volatility despite the frequent hits
- Lower max win than several Very high Megaways peers
- No free demo is listed
Verdict
Twin Spin Megaways blends the old twin-reel idea with avalanches and a Megaways count that tops out at 117,649. At 96.04% RTP the house edge is 3.96%, and the Very high volatility label sits next to a 35% hit rate. The free spins need five scatters, which is a demanding trigger. Treat the 4,900x max as a ceiling and size stakes so that a long quiet stretch does not hurt.
