Honey Rush review
Most slots use rectangles. Honey Rush, from 2019, swaps them for a honeycomb: Play'n GO describes it as the studio's first hexagonal cascading grid, holding 37 symbols. Clusters of matching cells pay and then clear, and every cleared cell feeds a meter that unlocks a feature with roaming wilds and colony transformations. The catch sits in the maths, where five RTP versions span more than ten points.
A honeycomb instead of reels
A win needs at least five identical symbols joined in a cluster. The cluster can take any shape; each symbol only has to touch at least one other symbol of the same kind. Because every hexagon has more neighbours than a square cell, groups can snake across the board in directions a normal grid does not allow.
After a cluster pays, its symbols vanish and new ones drop into the gaps. The remaining symbols and the fresh arrivals can then join into a new cluster, so one spin may pay more than once. When nothing more connects, the spin is over.
Worker Colony
A random helper that can fire on a spin that would otherwise pay nothing. It turns the symbols around the central cell into copies of that middle symbol, which builds a cluster on the spot and clears it from the grid, opening space for a cascade.
Filling the Rush Meter
Every cluster adds its size to the Rush Meter: a group of six symbols moves the meter up by six. Fill it and the Rush feature begins. The meter has four levels, and each level has to be filled within a single spin to move on to the next one.
This is the central design choice. Base-game clusters are not just small payouts; they are progress towards the bonus. A long cascade that clears many cells is worth more than its direct win because it pushes the meter forward.
Inside the Rush feature
Each new level brings extra tools. The feature only ends when no further winning combinations can be made and every stored Colony feature has been used, so the length of a round depends on how far the meter climbs.
Honeypot wilds
Starting the Rush awards one sticky Honeypot wild that moves around the grid to help form clusters until the round ends. Level two adds a second Honeypot and level three a third. Each carries a random x1, x2 or x3 multiplier, and the multipliers of all Honeypots in a cluster are multiplied together: two x3 wilds in the same group give x9.
Drone Colony
Collected on entering each new level of the meter. It changes five symbols around the centre to match the middle one and forms a cluster, but it is held back until no other winning combination is available. Drones not used yet are queued for later in the round.
Queen Colony
Unlocked only on reaching level four. It transforms symbols to build a cluster of at least 20, and the studio says it can turn the entire grid into one symbol. It is the top reward of the meter and the hardest one to reach.
Five RTPs and what they cost
Play'n GO lists Honey Rush in five versions: 96.5%, 94.5%, 91.5%, 87.5% and 84.5%. The house edge runs from 3.5% at the top to 15.5% at the bottom. Per $1,000 wagered, that is about $35 kept at the best setting and $155 at the worst, with $55, $85 and $125 for the three versions in between.
The gap shows up quickly in short sessions. One hundred spins at $1 cost $3.50 on average at 96.5% and $15.50 at 84.5%. At $5 a spin the same 100 spins average $17.50 or $77.50. Even at $0.20 the figures are $0.70 against $3.10. Because the same title can run at any of these settings, checking the RTP shown in the game's information screen before spending anything is worth the minute it takes.
Volatility is listed as Very high, meaning long dry stretches are normal and results come in uneven bursts. No max win is published in our data.
Sequel and neighbours
Honey Rush 100 followed in 2023 with a 96.2% RTP and the same Very high label. Several 2019 Play'n GO releases share the profile: Wild Falls at 96.5%, The Sword and The Grail at 96.53% and Contact at 96.55%, all Very high. Rise of Merlin lists 96.58%, which is close to the top version here.
Pros
- Hexagonal 37-cell grid with any-shape clusters
- Base-game clusters build towards the bonus through the Rush Meter
- Honeypot multipliers combine, two x3 wilds giving x9
- Free official demo available
Cons
- Five RTP versions, the lowest at 84.5% with a 15.5% house edge
- Very high volatility means long stretches without a feature
- No published max win
Verdict
Honey Rush turns the base game into a progress bar: clusters on a hexagonal grid pay and feed a meter that unlocks moving Honeypot wilds and Colony transformations. The top setting is 96.5%, but the 84.5% version costs more than four times as much per spin. With Very high volatility and no published ceiling, try the free demo first and check which RTP is in use.
