Dead or Alive 2 review

Outlaws, saloons and a train job: NetEnt's Wild West slot, released on 23 April 2019, is built to hurt as much as it pays. The catalogue rates it Very high for volatility, and the studio's page says it offers a choice between three free spins rounds, each with its own mix of multipliers and extra spins. It also carries an awkward gap between two max win figures, which this review lays out openly rather than picking one.

Outlaws on a 5x3 grid

The studio lists a grid of five reels and three rows with nine paylines. Bets run from 0.09 to 9.00 euros according to NetEnt's data panel, which also shows a feature buy-in and a bonus mode as available.

The wilds are five outlaws. They stand in for paying symbols on a payline, in the main game and in the bonus rounds. In the free spins they take on extra jobs: they can trigger more spins or shapeshift into multipliers, depending on the round you pick.

Scatter pays before any bonus

Scatters pay on their own, and the amounts rise steeply. Two scatters return 2x the original bet, three return 4x, four return 25x and five return 2,500x. Three or more also open the free spins, so a top scatter hit pays twice over: cash first, then the bonus.

The jump from 25x to 2,500x between four and five scatters is the sharpest step in the table, which fits a game rated Very high for volatility.

Pick your free spins round

Three scatters or more start the bonus with 12 free spins, and the player chooses one of three modes before it begins. They differ mainly in how multipliers are earned.

The studio's description of the third mode is cut short in the text we hold, so only its opening is reported below.

Old Saloon Free Spins

Every win in this round gets a 2x multiplier. Two sticky wild symbols on the reels add an extra five free spins. It is the plainest of the three: one fixed multiplier, with the sticky wilds acting as the retrigger.

High Noon Saloon Free Spins

Here wilds turn into multipliers. Two wilds on the same reel become Double Multiplier Wilds, and three become Triple Multiplier Wilds. These stay in place as sticky wilds, and having one on each of the reels adds an extra five free spins.

Train Heist Free Spins

This round has a multiplier progress bar that fills by one step for every wild that lands. The rest of the studio's explanation is missing from our text, so we do not describe how the bar pays out.

Two max wins, one of them in doubt

The sources disagree on the ceiling. The intro line on NetEnt's page says players can win up to 100,000x their bet. The same page's data panel, and our catalogue, give a max payout of 1,600x. The two cannot both describe the same cap, and we cannot tell which the studio intends, so both are reported as stated. The 1,600x figure is the one used for the examples here.

At 1,600x the maximum is $320 on a $0.20 bet, $1,600 on a $1 bet and $8,000 on a $5 bet. The studio also calls the game high volatility, while the catalogue says Very high. We follow the catalogue label.

The maths and the original

There is one RTP on record, 96.8%, which means a house edge of 3.2% and an average loss of $32 per $1,000 wagered. A hundred spins at $0.20 cost $0.64 on average, at $1 they cost $3.20 and at $5, or $500 wagered, they cost $16. The hit frequency is given as 30%, so roughly three spins in ten return something.

The only other game in the series is the original Dead or Alive from 2009, listed at 96.82% with Very high volatility and a max win of 8,600x. Similar numbers appear in Joker Pro (96.8%, 1,000x), Mercy of the Gods (96.64%, 2,500x) and Cashomatic (96.33%, 2,200x), all rated Very high.

Pros

  • Three free spins modes to choose from, each built around a different multiplier idea
  • Scatters pay by themselves, up to 2,500x the bet for five
  • Single RTP of 96.8% and a 3.2% house edge, with a hit frequency of 30%
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • Sources disagree on max win: 100,000x in the studio's intro, 1,600x in its data panel and our catalogue
  • Very high volatility makes results swing hard in short sessions
  • Studio text for the Train Heist round is incomplete, so one of three modes is only partly explained

Verdict

Dead or Alive 2 offers a clear structure: scatters that pay on their own, then a choice of three free spins rounds. The 96.8% RTP and 30% hit frequency are decent, but Very high volatility and an unresolved max win figure, 1,600x or 100,000x, mean expectations should stay modest. It costs $32 per $1,000 wagered on average, so treat it as paid entertainment, and use the free demo to compare the three bonus modes.
