House of Doom review

A haunted house on a hill, said to be guarded by a seer, gives this 2018 Play'n GO slot its setting. The mechanics are built around one idea: highlighted reels. On every spin one reel is marked, and a wild that lands there grows to fill it. In the free spins the game marks two to five reels at once and adds a second wild, so the same rule becomes far more powerful.

Cast of symbols

Three symbols carry the rules. The Seer is the wild and replaces anything except the scatter. Two or more wilds side by side on an active line also count as a win of their own. The house is the scatter, present in both the base game and the free spins, and a skull is the bonus symbol.

Placement is fixed. House scatters only appear on reels 1, 3 and 5, while skulls only appear on reels 2, 3 and 4. The page does not give the number of paylines, so this review refers to active lines without a count.

Hellgate in the base game

On every spin, one reel is chosen at random and highlighted. If the Seer lands anywhere on that reel, she expands to cover it completely. A wild elsewhere stays a single symbol.

The effect is modest in the base game because only one reel is eligible, but it is the same mechanic that drives the free spins, where it is applied much more widely.

Doom Spins

Three house scatters in the main game award 10 Free Doom Spins, played at the bet and lines that started the feature. Inside them, three changes happen at once.

First, the house itself turns into a Wild House of Doom and works as a second wild for the whole round. Second, between two and five reels are highlighted on every spin instead of one, and at least one of reels 1, 3 and 5 is always among them. Third, both kinds of wild expand when they land on a highlighted reel, although the two can never land on the same reel.

The round can be extended. Three or more Wild House of Doom symbols in a free spin add one more spin for each symbol. Skull symbols do not appear during this feature.

Skulls of Abyss

Three skulls on reels 2, 3 and 4 start a pick game, and the prizes behind the skulls decide how long it lasts.

Pick again prizes

Awards of x1, x2 or x3 the total bet. These pay and let you choose another skull, so a run of them keeps the bonus going.

End prizes

Awards of x5 or x20 the total bet end the game when revealed. The house scatter is also an end symbol, but instead of a cash prize it sends you into the Doom Spins, so the pick game can double as a second route into the free spins.

Five versions, one Medium rating

Play'n GO offers House of Doom at 96.11%, 94.1%, 91.1%, 87.1% and 84.1%, with house edges of 3.89%, 5.9%, 8.9%, 12.9% and 15.9%. The operator running it chooses the setting, so the figure in the game's own help screen is the one that applies.

For each $1,000 put through the reels, the long-term cost is close to $38.90 at the best setting and $159 at the worst, with $59, $89 and $129 for the versions in between. A 100-spin session at $1 averages $3.89 or $15.90, at $0.20 it averages $0.78 or $3.18, and at $5 it is $19.45 or $79.50.

Volatility is Medium and no max win is published.

The Crypt and Medium-rated alternatives

House of Doom 2: The Crypt arrived in 2021 at 96.25% and with a High rating. Among Medium games from the studio, Cops 'n' Robbers from 2018 lists a higher 96.46%, while Cats and Cash at 96.07% and Baker's Treat at 96.03%, both from 2018, sit a little lower.

Pros

  • Highlighted reels make every wild a potential full-reel wild
  • Free spins add a second wild and up to five highlighted reels
  • Two routes into Doom Spins: scatters or the skull pick game
  • Medium volatility and a free official demo

Cons

  • Lower versions go down to 84.1%
  • Payline count and max win are not published

Verdict

House of Doom turns a single rule, wilds expanding on highlighted reels, into a layered game: one reel in the base game, two to five in the Doom Spins, plus a second wild and a skull pick game that can also lead into the free spins. Medium volatility keeps swings moderate. The 96.11% top RTP is low for Play'n GO, so check the active version and budget for at least a 3.89% house edge.
