Hugo review

A small troll on a rescue mission gives this 2016 Play'n GO slot its story. Hugo must reach a hidden treasure and free his wife Hugoline from the villains, and the game turns that plot into two separate bonuses: a pick-a-door search through a gold mine and a free spins round where you choose the trade-off between more spins and bigger scatter prizes. Underneath sits a traditional 10-line layout with a wild that doubles wins.

A traditional layout

Hugo uses five reels and up to 10 paylines. Lines are switched on in numerical order, starting from line 1, and the stake can be raised to 5 coins per line. That older style of bet setup gives you control over how many lines are active, but fewer lines also means fewer ways for a spin to pay.

The wild symbol substitutes for other symbols and doubles any win it helps complete, including in the free spins. The only exception is a win made entirely of wild symbols, which is not doubled.

Two bonus features

Each bonus has its own scatter, so the two can be told apart at a glance.

Of the two, the free spins carry the clearer maths: the extra scatter pays a fixed multiple of the total bet, and the choice of set lets you decide how that value is spread.

Treasure bonus game

Treasure Chest scatters appear only on reels 1, 3 and 5; landing them there starts a pick game inside a gold mine. Each door can hold coins, and the large treasure pays the most. If Don Croco, the crocodile henchman, is behind a door you open, the round ends.

Free spins

Three or more Evil Witch Afskylia scatters, which can land on any reel, start the free spins. An extra scatter, Hugoline, can then appear stacked on all reels. You pick one of three sets, each paying the extra scatter differently.

Picking your free spins set

The choice is the most interesting part of the game. Five free spins pay 3x the total bet for each Hugoline scatter that appears. Ten free spins pay 2x per Hugoline. Fifteen free spins pay 1x per Hugoline.

Fewer spins with a higher value per scatter concentrate the result into a short burst; more spins at a lower value spread it out. The rules do not say which set returns more on average, so the decision is about preference, not a better or worse option.

Three or more witch scatters during the feature retrigger it, and the extra spins match the number you chose at the start.

Five RTP settings to watch

Operators can run Hugo at five different returns: 96.4%, 94.4%, 91.34%, 87.57% or 84.53%. The matching house edges run from 3.6% to 15.47%. On $1,000 wagered, that is an average cost of $36 at the top setting and $154.70 at the bottom one, more than four times as much for the same game.

In session terms, 100 spins at $1 cost $3.60 on average at 96.4% but $15.47 at 84.53%. At $5 a spin, the same 100 spins average $18 or $77.35. Because the game looks identical either way, checking the RTP in the help screen is the most useful thing a player can do before starting.

Volatility is rated High, and no max win is published in our data.

The rest of the Hugo series

Four later games carry the character. Hugo 2 (2017) lists 96.53% with High volatility, Hugo Goal (2018) 96.5% at Medium, Hugo Carts (2021) 96.23% at Very high, and Hugo Legacy (2023) 96.2% at High.

Among games with a similar profile, Sails of Gold, also from 2016, lists 96.25% with High volatility.

Pros

  • Two different bonuses: a pick-a-door game and free spins
  • Choice of 5, 10 or 15 free spins with different scatter values
  • Wild doubles the wins it helps form
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • Five RTP versions, the lowest at 84.53%
  • No published max win
  • High volatility, so bonuses can be far apart

Verdict

Hugo is an older, story-led slot with more choice than its 10-line layout suggests: a door-picking bonus, a wild that doubles wins and a free spins round where you trade spin count for scatter value. At its best setting the RTP is 96.4%, but versions down to 84.53% exist, and volatility is High. Check the RTP in the game, try the demo and treat each session as a paid pastime.
