Dazzle Me Megaways review
Dazzle Me Megaways is the 2021 follow-up to NetEnt's original Dazzle Me from 2015, rebuilt on the Megaways engine. The reels change height from spin to spin, winning symbols are replaced through avalanches, and whole reels can turn into wild reels. The biggest change from the first game is in the numbers: the original is listed as Low volatility with a 700x top win, while this one is Very high with a 13,400x ceiling.
How a spin pays
The grid has six reels with heights of 5, 5, 7, 7, 9 and 9 at their maximum, which multiply out to up to 99,225 ways to win. Because the number of symbols on each reel varies, so does the number of ways in any given spin.
Every win starts an avalanche. Symbols that formed a win disappear and new ones fall in to take their place, so a single paid spin can chain several wins together. The studio notes that during avalanches in the main game, non-wild symbols may drop onto reels that were wild reels for the opening spin.
Dazzling Wild Reels
This is the core feature and it works differently in the two parts of the game.
In the main game
The feature may switch on at random during any spin. Up to three of reels 2 to 6 are picked at the start. On the opening spin only wilds can appear on the chosen reels. During the avalanches that follow, any symbol can appear on them again.
In the free spins
At least one Dazzling Wild Reel is in play on every free spin, and only wilds can land on them throughout the spin and its avalanches. Each reel has its own counter, which starts at 2 and rises whenever wilds on that reel take part in a win. The counter sets how many wilds land on the reel.
Free spins
Four Free Spins symbols anywhere on the reels award 8 free spins. Each extra symbol beyond the fourth adds 4 more spins. Since the wild reels are always active in the bonus and their counters keep growing with wins, the round can build momentum the longer a reel keeps contributing to wins.
The counters are the part to watch. A reel that starts with two wilds and keeps winning is delivering more wilds each time, so the sequences that matter most are long chains on the same reels.
The cost of playing
One RTP is on record, 96.1%, which is a house edge of 3.9%. Over a long run that is about $39 lost per $1,000 wagered. A 100-spin session costs $0.78 on average at $0.20, $3.90 at $1 and $19.50 at $5.
The max win is 13,400x the bet: $2,680 at $0.20, $13,400 at $1 and $67,000 at $5. The studio lists a 24% hit frequency, with bets from €0.10 to €50.00. Volatility is Very high, so results can be well above or below those averages in a short session.
Original and alternatives
The only other game in the series in our catalogue is the 2015 original, Dazzle Me, listed at 96.91% RTP, Low volatility and 700x. It has the higher return, but this Megaways version trades that for a far higher ceiling.
Among similar numbers, Twin Spin Megaways shows 96.04% with 4,900x, Wild Turkey Megaways 96.05% with 7,239x, Mummy Megaways 96.2% with 16,321x and The Wish Master Megaways 96.07% with 27,018x. All are rated Very high.
Pros
- Up to 99,225 ways to win with avalanches
- Wild reels are active on every free spin, with counters that grow
- Max win of 13,400x the bet
- A 24% hit frequency, listed by the studio
Cons
- Very high volatility, and the original is far calmer at Low
- RTP of 96.1% is lower than the 96.91% of the original Dazzle Me
- The wild reels in the main game are random, so you cannot plan around them
Verdict
Dazzle Me Megaways keeps the idea of dazzling wilds but moves it to a six-reel Megaways layout with avalanches, and the free spins make the wild reels permanent and growing. The 96.1% RTP and Very high volatility describe a game of big swings with a 3.9% house edge, around $39 per $1,000 wagered. It suits players who want an upgrade in potential over the original and understand that a 13,400x ceiling is a limit, not a typical result.
