Bomb Bonanza review

Underground, with a pickaxe and a lucky miner, Bomb Bonanza turns its wild symbol into a bomb. In the free spins the bombs are upgraded by collecting gold, and an upgraded bomb can add spins and spread into larger wild patterns. Pragmatic Play put it on a 5x5 grid in 2022 and gave it a hard cap of 2,015x the bet, so the design question is how quickly the bombs can build towards that figure.

The mine and the symbols

The game is played on 5x5 reels in a gold mine. The studio names pickaxes, gold pans and wild bombs among the symbols. Our catalogue lists the win system as paylines, with no cascades, respins or expanding reels. The rules text we hold is partly garbled, and one passage describes wins as blocks of connected symbols instead, so the way lines are counted is the one thing to confirm in the demo.

The bonus is started by free spins symbols, which the rules do not treat as a paid scatter.

Free spins and the gold

Three free spins symbols start the bonus round with six free spins. The rest of the design happens inside it. Players collect gold, and the gold is used to upgrade the wild bombs. The studio says an upgrade has two effects: it awards extra free spins, and it expands the bomb into patterns of different sizes.

Another symbol, the Gold Nugget, appears only during the free spins round, according to the rules. Only fragments of the nugget's behaviour are legible in the text we hold, so we cannot describe how it fits with the bomb upgrades beyond the studio's summary.

Wild bombs

Wild bombs are the main wilds of the game. In the bonus they are upgraded with collected gold. Each upgrade can add free spins and enlarge the area the bomb turns wild, which is how the extra wilds help reach the treasures in the mine.

Max win limit

The rules cap any round at 2,015x the bet. If the total win of a round reaches that figure, the round ends at once, the win is paid and any remaining features are lost.

Bonus buy

Our catalogue lists a bonus buy for this game. The rules we hold mention a price of 100x the current bet, but that passage also refers to features this game does not appear to have, so treat the price as unconfirmed and check it in the demo.

The maths

One RTP is on record: 96.46%, a house edge of 3.54%. Over a long run that is about $35.40 lost per $1,000 wagered. Average costs over 100 spins are $0.71 at a $0.20 bet, $3.54 at $1 and $17.70 at $5, which is $500 wagered.

The maximum win of 2,015x converts to $403 at $0.20, $2,015 at $1 and $10,075 at $5. No volatility label is published.

Similar games

Cosmic Cash, also from 2022, lists 96.55% with a 2,650x cap, and John Hunter and the Book of Tut Respin 96.5% with 4,000x. Badge Blitz (96.5%, 3,000x) and Big Juan (96.7%, 2,600x) have higher caps as well. Ding Dong Christmas Bells (96.05%) and Big Bass Halloween (96.04%) both list 2,100x, only slightly above Bomb Bonanza's 2,015x.

Pros

  • Gold collected in the free spins upgrades the wild bombs
  • Upgrades add spins and enlarge the wild patterns
  • Clear 2,015x cap, stated in the studio text and the rules
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • The cap of 2,015x is lower than every similar title listed
  • The rules text is partly garbled, so the win system is not fully confirmed
  • No volatility label is published

Verdict

Bomb Bonanza is built around one idea: collect gold in the free spins and use it to grow the wild bombs. The 96.46% RTP leaves a 3.54% house edge, the cap is 2,015x and no volatility rating is given. With the win system only partly confirmed and the bonus buy price unverified, the free demo is the right place to start, and any play is paid entertainment.
