Ankh of Anubis review
Ankh of Anubis is a 2019 Play'n GO slot set in ancient Egypt, played on five reels with 576 payways. Its signature is a jackal god who drops extra wilds onto the reels at random. In the base game that happens by chance; in the free spins it becomes a target, because collecting five ankh symbols calls the wilds in on purpose. That collector, and the way it carries over between spins, is the heart of the bonus.
576 payways, left to right
Wins pay from the leftmost reel to the right across 576 payways rather than a short list of fixed lines. The studio's page does not reproduce the paytable or the symbol list, so the review concentrates on the features it does describe.
The base game has one special event. Play'n GO calls it the Anubis Wilds feature.
Anubis Wilds
Triggered at random on any base-game spin. While the reels are still turning, one or more wild symbols are added. The studio is clear that this does not always produce a win; it improves the odds of a combination on that spin without promising one.
The free spins and the ankh meter
Three scatters award 10 free spins, four award 15 and five award 20. Inside the round two things change: wilds can now be earned, and the round can keep growing.
Ankh collection
Ankh symbols are collected during the free spins. Reaching five ankhs triggers Anubis Wilds, which add wilds at the end of the spin before the result is paid. The count carries over from spin to spin and only resets when the feature ends, so ankhs gathered early are never wasted.
Retriggers
Three, four or five scatters during the round add 3, 4 or 5 more free spins. There is no limit to how many times this can happen. The round only stops early if the maximum win is reached, a ceiling the studio does not state in figures.
One game, five returns
Five RTP versions exist: 96.2%, 94.2%, 91.2%, 87.2% and 84.2%. The corresponding house edges are 3.8%, 5.8%, 8.8%, 12.8% and 15.8%. Per $1,000 wagered over a long run, that means an average cost of $38 at the top setting, $58, $88 and $128 in the middle, and $158 at the bottom.
Session figures make the spread concrete. A hundred spins at $0.20 cost $0.76 at 96.2% but $3.16 at 84.2%. At $1 the figures are $3.80 and $15.80, at $5 they are $19 and $79. The version in use is not always the top one, so look in the game's info screen before playing.
The catalogue rates the volatility Very high and publishes no max win.
Related titles
Ankh of Anubis Awakening arrived in 2024 with the same 96.2% headline and a lower rating of High volatility. Inferno Joker from 2019 is listed at 96.38% with Very high volatility. From 2020, Reactoonz 2, Testament and 24k Dragon all share the 96.2% figure and the Very high label.
Who it suits
The ankh meter gives the free spins a sense of progress, and unlimited retriggers mean the round has no fixed end. That same design concentrates the value in the bonus, which is what Very high volatility describes. It suits patient players with small stakes relative to their budget. The free official demo shows how often the random wilds appear before any money is involved.
Pros
- 576 payways make wins easy to form and read
- Ankh collection carries over across the whole free-spins round
- Unlimited retriggers of 3 to 5 extra spins
- Free official demo available
Cons
- RTP can be as low as 84.2% depending on the version
- Very high volatility concentrates value in the bonus
- The max win figure is not published
Verdict
Ankh of Anubis is a 576-payway Egyptian slot where wilds arrive at random in the base game and by collection in the free spins, with unlimited retriggers on top. The top setting is 96.2%, but lower settings down to 84.2% exist and the volatility is Very high. Check the version in the info screen, use the free demo first, and budget for a 3.8% house edge at best.
