Platinum Lightning review
Platinum Lightning dates from 2016 and draws on Greek folklore old and new: Zeus, a pantheon of gods and heroes, and a Sirtaki tune in the background. The design is classic in spirit. Instead of cascades or collecting meters, BGaming leans on two symbols with steep combination multipliers and a free-spins round that freezes the outer reels as wilds. A gamble option after wins rounds out a short, readable rulebook.
Four mechanics, briefly
The studio's page names four parts, and each one is simple enough to explain in a sentence or two. The interesting detail is how high the wild and scatter multipliers climb for five of a kind.
Wild symbol
The wild pays on its own and stands in for every symbol except the scatter. Three, four and five wilds in a winning combination multiply the win by 8x, 88x and 888x respectively, so a five-wild combination is the main target of the base game.
Scatter symbol
Scatters pay in any position, following the paytable. Three, four and five of them multiply the win by 7x, 77x and 777x. Because placement does not matter, the scatter is the most direct route to a large single-spin result.
Sticky Reel bonus
Two bonus symbols, one on the first reel and one on the last, award 10 free spins. During the round reels 1 and 5 turn into locked wilds and only reels 2, 3 and 4 keep spinning, so the frozen outer reels can help complete combinations across the middle.
Gamble round
After any win in the main game, a gamble option opens. You guess the colour or the suit of a card to raise the win. Taking it is optional; the studio presents it as a way to increase a win you already have.
Return, edge and the missing labels
Our catalogue records one RTP, 96.29%, for a house edge of 3.71%. Averaged over a very long run that is $37.10 kept per $1,000 staked.
On a session scale, 100 spins at $0.20 cost $0.74 on average, 100 spins at $1 cost $3.71, and 100 spins at $5 put $500 through the reels at an average cost of $18.55.
Two figures are not in our data. The catalogue has no volatility label and no max win. BGaming's page fills both gaps in its own words: it calls the game medium-high volatility and states a top win of 8,888 times the stake, which would be $8,888 on a $1 bet. Treat those as the studio's statements rather than catalogue figures.
Fairness and devices
BGaming says the title runs on its Provably Fair technology together with a certified random number generator, and that the layout adapts to phones and tablets. A free official demo is available, which is the easiest way to watch the Sticky Reel round before deciding on a stake.
The Deluxe version and 2016 neighbours
Platinum Lightning Deluxe followed in 2018 with the same 96.29% RTP; our data carries no volatility or max win for it. Several similar games from 2016 return more on paper: West Town lists 96.95% with Low volatility, Princess Royal 97.1% with High, and Book of Pyramids 97.13%. Princess of Sky, also from 2016, sits a little lower at 95.99%.
Who it suits
Anyone who likes fixed, old-school rules will find little to learn here. The 888x wild and 777x scatter combinations put a lot of the value into rare five-symbol hits, so the base game will often feel quiet in between. The gamble round adds extra swings by choice, so it is worth deciding in advance whether to use it at all.
Pros
- Simple rules with a clear free-spins round of 10 spins and locked wild reels
- Five wilds multiply a win by 888x and five scatters by 777x
- Provably Fair technology, according to BGaming
- Free official demo available
Cons
- The 96.29% RTP leaves a 3.71% house edge
- Volatility and max win come only from studio copy, not catalogue data
- The optional gamble round adds extra swings after wins
Verdict
Platinum Lightning is a compact 2016 release: a wild worth up to 888x, a scatter worth up to 777x and 10 free spins with locked outer reels. The 96.29% RTP is fair, and the medium-high volatility and 8,888x top win are the studio's own figures. Use the free demo to judge the pace and budget for a 3.71% house edge.
