Jack and the Beanstalk review

Keys, not scatters, are the currency of this fairytale. NetEnt released its take on the beanstalk story on 12 December 2011, and in its free spins Jack collects keys from the fifth reel to upgrade every wild he finds: first to money bags, then golden hens, then a golden harp that fills a reel. In the main game, Walking Wilds step across the reels and triple any win they join. Volatility is High and the cap is 7,100x.

Wilds that walk

The grid is five reels by three rows with 20 bet lines, fixed in both the minimum and maximum setting. NetEnt lists bets from 0.20 to 100 per spin.

Walking Wilds can land on any reel, in the main game and in the free spins. Each one triggers a re-spin, and after every re-spin it moves one reel to the left. It disappears after its final re-spin on reel one. Any win that includes a wild is tripled, so a wild that lands on the right-hand side can walk through several paid re-spins before it leaves.

Walking Wild

Lands on any reel and shifts one position to the left after each re-spin, until it leaves from reel one. Wins with a wild pay three times the normal amount, which makes the walk a sequence of chances rather than a single substitution.

Treasure Collection in the free spins

Once Jack climbs into the clouds, the reels change and keys start to appear on reel 5. Every three keys collected upgrade all the wilds that follow. The source we have does not state how the free spins are triggered or how many are awarded, so we only describe what happens inside them.

Double Stacked Money Bags

After 3 keys, any wild that appears becomes a double stacked wild showing two money bags, taking up two positions on its reel instead of one.

Triple Stacked Golden Hens

With 6 keys collected, wilds turn into triple stacked wilds of three golden hens, covering three positions.

Expanding Golden Harp

The final upgrade arrives at 9 keys. From then on, wilds become expanding wilds that stretch to fill their whole reel. Combined with walking and tripled wins, this is the stage where the round can pay the most.

RTP, hit rate and payouts

One RTP is listed, 96.28%, which gives a house edge of 3.72%: about $37.20 for every $1,000 wagered across a long run.

NetEnt publishes a hit frequency of 34%, a fairly high rate for a High volatility game; many of those hits will be small. On average 100 spins cost $0.74 at $0.20, $3.72 at $1 and $18.60 at $5.

The max payout is 7,100x the bet: $1,420 at a $0.20 stake, $7,100 at $1 and $35,500 at $5. Getting near it would depend on the key upgrades lining up late in a free spins round.

Sequels, remasters and look-alikes

Jack and the Beanstalk Remastered keeps the same numbers: 96.28%, High volatility and 7,100x. Jack and the Beanstalk 2 lists 96.32% and moves to Very high volatility with a 20,000x cap. Among similar games, Halloween Jack mirrors the original's 96.28% and 7,100x, Flowers Christmas lists 96.32% with 9,200x, and Jungle Spirit Megaways lists 96.2% with 6,500x.

Who it suits

Players who like progress inside a bonus will enjoy the key collection, since each set of three keys visibly changes the wilds. The frequent hits keep the base game moving, but High volatility means the real value is held back for the free spins.

Pros

  • Walking Wilds bring re-spins, and wins with wilds are tripled
  • Key collection upgrades wilds at 3, 6 and 9 keys
  • 34% hit frequency keeps the base game active
  • 7,100x max payout

Cons

  • High volatility
  • RTP of 96.28% leaves a 3.72% house edge
  • The free spins trigger is not described in our source

Verdict

Jack and the Beanstalk combines Walking Wilds that triple wins with a free spins round where collected keys upgrade wilds to stacked money bags, golden hens and finally an expanding harp. The RTP is 96.28%, volatility is High and the cap is 7,100x. It suits players who enjoy a bonus that builds, played with small stakes and the 3.72% house edge in mind.
