Jack and the Beanstalk Remastered review

This is a remake, and the numbers show how faithful it is. NetEnt's 2023 version of the beanstalk slot lists the same 96.28% RTP, High volatility and 7,100x maximum as the 2011 original. The remake's own selling point, according to NetEnt, is a Buy Feature. The mechanics centre on Walking Wilds that move one reel to the left and keep triggering respins, then on keys collected during the free spins.

Walking Wilds and respins

The game uses five reels, three rows and 20 paylines. Walking Wilds can land on any spin. When one does, it triggers a respin and slides one reel to the left. If a Walking Wild is still on the reels after that, the cycle repeats.

The respins continue for as long as at least one such Wild remains on the board, in the base game and in the free spins alike. A Wild that starts on the right of the grid therefore has several steps to make before it leaves, and each step is a chance for new wins.

Free spins and the key collection

Three or more Scatters in the main game award 10 free spins. Three or more Scatters during the round award 5 more. The round also introduces keys, which can appear on reel five. Collecting them upgrades what every new Wild looks like.

Stacked Money Bags (3 keys)

After three keys, all new Wilds become Money Bag symbols. Each appears as a stack of two, so a single landing covers two positions on its reel instead of one.

Stacked Golden Hens (6 keys)

After six keys, new Wilds become Golden Hens, which appear as a stack of three. This is the middle step of the ladder and covers a whole reel of three rows.

Expanding Golden Harps (9 keys)

After nine keys, new Wilds turn into Expanding Golden Harps that cover entire reels. This is the top rung of the key ladder.

Buying the free spins

The Buy Feature opens a treasure chest and starts the free spins at once for 45x the original bet. At a $1 bet that is $45 for the round, and the price scales with the bet. Note that RTP in our catalogue is a single figure for the game and the pack does not split it between normal and bought rounds.

What the numbers say

The RTP is 96.28% and the house edge is 3.72%, about $37.20 lost per $1,000 wagered. Volatility is High, and the hit frequency is 34%.

A 100-spin session averages $0.74 at a $0.20 bet, $3.72 at $1 and $18.60 at $5. The maximum win is 7,100x the bet, or $1,420 at $0.20, $7,100 at $1 and $35,500 at $5.

The original and other options

The only other game in the series is the original Jack and the Beanstalk from 2011, with an identical 96.28%, High and 7,100x. Halloween Jack also lists 96.28% and 7,100x. Jungle Spirit Megaways is at 96.2% and 6,500x, Spinsane at 96.26% and 5,000x, and Flowers Christmas and Happy Riches both at 96.32% and 9,200x.

Pros

  • Walking Wilds trigger respins in the base game and in the free spins
  • Three key milestones upgrade Wilds to stacks and full reels
  • Buy Feature available at 45x the bet
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • High volatility, with a 7,100x ceiling
  • Keys can only appear during the free spins
  • No separate RTP figure for bought free spins in the pack

Verdict

The Remastered version keeps the numbers of the original: 96.28% RTP, a 3.72% house edge, High volatility and a 7,100x maximum. The new element is the 45x Buy Feature, which is an option, not an advantage. The key ladder gives the free spins a clear direction, so the demo is a good way to see how often the later stages are reached.
