101 Candies review

NetEnt's 2023 candy slot puts clusters on a 7x7 board and attaches a conveyor belt of wilds to it. Each Avalanche drops a multiplier wild onto the reels, and those wilds range from 2x up to 101x. Feature Coins can then upgrade, destroy, scramble or transform what is on screen, while the free spins collect their wins in a jar and pay out at the end. Volatility is High, the RTP is 96.08% and the ceiling is 3,580x.

Clusters, Avalanches and the Wild Conveyor

This is a Cluster Pays game: matching candy symbols form groups, and the group pays. After a win, an Avalanche removes the paid symbols and drops new ones in. Each Avalanche also drops a multiplier wild onto the reels, which multiplies wins and leaves room for new wilds. Wilds substitute for payout symbols.

The wilds queue on the Wild Conveyor. In the base game the conveyor resets on every spin, so the wilds do not carry into the next spin. In the free spins it does not reset.

Feature Coins

During an Avalanche a Feature Coin may appear. The studio lists four, each tied to a different effect on the conveyor or the reels.

Upgrade

Boosts every wild multiplier by 1, up to a limit of 101x. This is the coin that pushes multipliers towards the top of the 2x to 101x range.

Destroy

Removes the 5 leftmost wilds from the Wild Conveyor. It is the one coin that works against the player's multiplier build-up.

Scramble

Shuffles all wilds on the Wild Conveyor, changing the order in which their multipliers will arrive.

Transform

Replaces a random symbol with another one, excluding scatters and wilds.

Free spins and the Total Win Jar

At least three scatters start the free spins, and the count sets the length: 3 scatters give 10 spins, 4 give 11, 5 give 12, 6 give 13, 7 give 14 and 8 give 15. Wins during the round collect in the Total Wins coin jar beside the grid, and the jar pays out at the end of the bonus.

The studio also lists a Buy Feature for 100 times the bet. It plays one main-game spin that is certain to start the free spins, with 10 to 15 of them. The price is therefore a fixed multiple of the stake, whatever the stake is.

The numbers

One RTP is recorded: 96.08%, a house edge of 3.92%. That is about $39.20 lost per $1,000 wagered over a long run. In short sessions, 100 spins at $0.20 cost $0.78 on average, 100 spins at $1 cost $3.92, and 100 spins at $5, or $500 wagered, cost $19.60.

Volatility is High and the hit frequency is 25%. The max win is 3,580x the bet, equal to $716 at a $0.20 bet, $3,580 at $1 and $17,900 at $5. The studio puts the probability of reaching that max win at 1 in 50m.

High-volatility alternatives

Gonzo's Gold lists 96.11% and 3,484x, Finn and the Dragon Tales 96.04% and 3,800x, Big Bang Boom 96.07% and 4,300x, and Twister 96.04% and 4,300x. Divine Fortune Megaways reaches 96.09% and 4,500x, and Golden Wheels of Egypt 96.08% and 5,000x. All are rated High, so 101 Candies sits at the lower end for top prize and exactly level on return with Golden Wheels of Egypt.

Pros

  • Multiplier wilds from 2x to 101x arrive with every Avalanche
  • Four Feature Coins add variety to what happens on screen
  • Free spins pay out through a Total Wins jar at the end
  • A 25% hit frequency is published

Cons

  • The 3,580x max win is on the low side among High-volatility peers listed
  • The Destroy coin removes wilds from the conveyor, which can set back the multiplier build-up

Verdict

101 Candies gives clusters a multiplier engine: wilds queue on a conveyor, coins reshape it and the free spins bank their wins in a jar. The 96.08% RTP carries a 3.92% house edge, volatility is High and the ceiling is 3,580x. As paid entertainment it costs about $39.20 per $1,000 wagered on average, and it suits players who want multiplier-driven bonuses at High rather than Very high volatility.
