Jolly Roger review
Jolly Roger is a 2012 Play'n GO pirate slot whose top RTP setting is 97%. The rules on the official page are brief. Wilds double the wins they join, scatters pay anywhere, and two bonus rounds, the Treasure Chest and the Treasure Map, are triggered by symbols on active lines. Volatility is Low.
The rules in brief
Any winning combination that includes a wild pays double the normal prize. Two or more scatter symbols anywhere on the reels also count as a win, so scatters do not need a line.
The two bonuses work differently from most modern slots. Instead of scatters, they need three or more of their symbol on an active line. Three or more chest symbols on a line start the Treasure Chest bonus round. Three or more map symbols on a line start the Treasure Map bonus round, and the map only appears on reels 1, 2 and 3, so it must line up from the left. The official page does not describe what happens inside either round.
Five RTP settings
Play'n GO lets operators choose between five RTP versions: 97%, 94.98%, 91.9%, 87.91% and 84.94%. The matching house edges are 3%, 5.02%, 8.1%, 12.09% and 15.06%. The spread matters a lot. At 97%, $1,000 wagered costs about $30 over a long run; at 84.94% it costs about $150.60, five times as much.
The same gap shows in short sessions. 100 spins at $1 cost $3 on average at the top setting and $15.06 at the lowest. At $5 a spin the figures are $15 and $75.30, and at $0.20 they are $0.60 and $3.01. Check the RTP shown in the game's information panel before playing, since the version is not visible from the reels.
Low volatility, modest swings
The Low volatility rating suggests smaller, more frequent results than in a high-volatility slot. No max win is published for the game in our data.
That profile suits players on a small budget who want a long, even session rather than a shot at a huge payout. The pirate theme and short rule list also make it an easy first slot, as long as the RTP version is checked before the first spin.
Sequels and neighbours
Two sequels changed the profile. Jolly Roger 2 from 2020 lists 96.2% and Jolly Roger Wild Kraken from 2024 lists 96.26%, both with High volatility. For a low-volatility alternative, Rage to Riches from 2013 lists 97.12%, Sea Hunter from 2017 lists 96.64%, and Space Race from 2012 lists 96.29%, all rated Low.
Pros
- Wins with a wild pay double
- Two separate bonus rounds
- Low volatility and a free official demo
Cons
- Lower RTP versions down to 84.94% exist
- The official rules do not explain what happens inside the bonus rounds
- No published max win
Verdict
Jolly Roger is a straightforward low-volatility pirate slot whose main strength is a 97% RTP at its top setting. Doubled wild wins and two line-triggered treasure bonuses keep it simple. The catch is the five RTP versions, with the lowest at 84.94%, so checking the version in the game matters. Treat it as paid entertainment with a 3% house edge at best.
