Cat Wilde and the Doom of Dead review
Cat Wilde is the daughter of the explorer Rich Wilde, according to Play'n GO, and this 2020 slot sends her into the tombs of Ancient Egypt on her own. The design is built around expansion. Wild symbols stretch to fill a whole reel, and in the free spins a randomly chosen symbol does the same once it joins a win. It is a High volatility game, and it comes in five RTP versions, the lowest of which is 84.26%.
Expanding Wilds in the base game
The standard symbols are ancient Egyptian artefacts. Alongside them come the Expanding Wilds, drawn as long-dead kings and queens. The studio says there are five of these undead figures.
A Wild can land on any of the five reels. When it does, it expands to fill its entire reel. The studio contrasts this with ordinary Wilds, since a full reel of Wild helps complete several paylines at once.
Free spins and the Special Expanding Symbol
Three Scatters, shown as a compass, unlock the free spins. They can land on reels one, three and five, and they award 10 free spins. Landing the Scatters again during the round awards a further 10, and the studio says this can repeat, so the total has no fixed limit.
The compass pick
Before the free spins begin, the compass spins and lands on one of the game's high or low-paying symbols. That symbol becomes the Special Expanding Symbol for the whole round, and every copy of it on the reels is converted.
Expansion on a win
Once a Special Expanding Symbol is part of a winning combination, it expands to cover all three positions on its reel. The studio says this can lead to even more winning combinations.
Five RTP versions
The catalogue lists 96.29%, 94.22%, 91.21%, 87.26% and 84.26%. The house edges are 3.71%, 5.78%, 8.79%, 12.74% and 15.74%. Per $1,000 wagered, the average cost is about $37.10 on the top version, $57.80, $87.90 and $127.40 on the middle ones, and $157.40 on the lowest.
For a 100-spin session, the headline version costs about $0.74 at a $0.20 bet, $3.71 at $1 and $18.55 at $5. The lowest costs $3.15, $15.74 and $78.70 for the same sessions. With a spread that wide, it is worth checking which version you are playing before you stake.
Volatility, max win and similar titles
Volatility is listed as High. No maximum win is published, so the review does not quote one.
Several other 2020 games with a High label list almost the same headline RTP: Golden Osiris (96.27%), Octopus Treasure (96.26%), Blinged and New Year Riches (96.25%), Saxon (96.24%) and Charlie Chance in Hell to Pay (96.23%).
Pros
- Expanding Wilds fill a whole reel in the base game
- Free spins can be retriggered for another 10 spins with no fixed limit
- A random symbol becomes an expanding symbol for the free spins
- Free official demo available
Cons
- Five RTP versions, the lowest at 84.26% with a 15.74% house edge
- No maximum win is published
- Grid size and payline count are not stated in the source text
Verdict
Cat Wilde and the Doom of Dead keeps its rules compact: Wilds that fill a reel, a compass pick, and free spins that can be extended. The 96.29% version has a 3.71% house edge, but the 84.26% version has 15.74%, a gap that matters more than any feature. With High volatility and no stated ceiling, the free demo is the safest way to see how the expanding symbol behaves.
