Butterfly Staxx 2 review

Butterfly Staxx 2 appeared in August 2019 as the sequel to a 2017 game, and it hides most of its value behind a choice. A scatter on the right reels lets the player pick between two quite different bonuses, while a full reel of butterflies opens extra play areas during re-spins. Set in a walled garden, it is a Medium volatility slot with a modest 300x max win, so the appeal lies in the structure rather than in the size of the top prize.

A garden with three play areas

The main board is five reels by four rows with up to 40 lines. Butterflies are the key symbol: a full stack of four butterfly symbols covering a whole reel activates Re-Spins. During those re-spins a second and a third play area may be unlocked, which widens the board available to the feature.

The studio describes the setting as a deep blue gameboard edged in gold, with flowers and golden butterflies. That is the whole of the visual detail given in the text we hold.

Choosing a bonus

Scatter symbols on reels one, three and five give the player a choice between two bonus games. One is a short run of spins, the other a picking game, so it helps to know the difference before choosing.

Butterfly Spins

Five Butterfly Spins are awarded. Only Cocoon symbols can land on the reels, and all three play areas are active from the first spin, so there is no waiting for a re-spin stack to open them.

Butterfly Frenzy

A pick-and-click bonus. It starts with 10 picks, and each pick reveals a butterfly with a coin prize that adds to the total win. Picking certain butterflies moves play to the next stage, up to level 5. Every stage adds 10 more picks to those left over. It can be played by hand or with Auto Pick.

RTP, volatility and cost

The catalogue lists a 96.35% RTP, a 3.65% house edge and a loss of about $36.50 per $1,000 wagered. A hundred spins cost $0.73 on average at a $0.20 bet, $3.65 at $1 and $18.25 at $5.

Volatility is Medium and the hit frequency is 25%, or one spin in four. The max win is 300x: $60 at $0.20, $300 at $1 and $1,500 at $5. The studio sets stakes between 0.25 and 1,250.00 euros. No free demo is listed.

The first game and other Medium slots

The original Butterfly Staxx from 2017 lists 96.8% RTP and the same 300x max win, but it is labelled Low. The sequel gives up a little RTP and moves up one volatility step.

Medium-rated games with closer numbers include Golden Grimoire (96.44%, 500x), Wild Worlds (96.47%, 600x), Jingle Spin (96.48%, 600x) and EggOMatic (96.5%, 600x). Each lists a higher ceiling than Butterfly Staxx 2.

Pros

  • A choice between two different bonus games
  • Butterfly Spins open all three play areas from the start
  • Medium volatility with a 25% hit frequency
  • House edge of 3.65% at a 96.35% RTP

Cons

  • Max win is only 300x, below the comparable Medium slots listed
  • RTP is lower than the 96.8% of the first game
  • No free demo is listed

Verdict

Butterfly Staxx 2 is built around decisions: whether to chase full stacks for re-spins, and which bonus to pick when the scatters land. With a 96.35% RTP, Medium volatility and a 300x ceiling it is a moderate game in both risk and reward. The house edge is 3.65%, so 100 spins at a $1 bet cost about $3.65 on average. Treat the cost as the price of the entertainment.
