The Wish Master review
Most slots hide their bonus behind a single trigger and a single round. The Wish Master, a NetEnt release dated 14 August 2014 on the studio's page, does something else: every scatter makes a genie grant one of five wild or multiplier features for a block of spins, and further scatters can stack a second and third feature on top. The result is a game whose behaviour changes from one feature mix to the next.
Layout and basics
The grid is a standard 5x3 with 20 fixed bet lines, and wins are paid along those lines. NetEnt lists a stake range of €0.20 to €100.00 per spin.
The studio also publishes a hit frequency of 38%, meaning roughly two spins in five return something. Some of those hits can be smaller than the stake, so the figure describes how often the reels pay, not whether a session ends ahead.
The five wishes
A scatter landing anywhere picks one of the following features at random and switches it on for 10 spins. Each active feature is shown in an inventory so you can see what is running.
Extra Wild
One symbol is shown in the inventory, and every copy of that symbol on the reels is turned into a wild. Converting a whole symbol type at once is the broadest of the five effects.
Wild Reel
The reel on which the triggering scatter landed is filled entirely with wilds, so every one of the 20 lines that crosses that column has a wild in place.
Expanding Wild
Any wild that lands grows to cover its whole reel. One ordinary wild therefore becomes three wild positions stacked in a column.
Multiplier
All line wins are multiplied by x2 or x3. Both multipliers can be active together, and in that case every line win is multiplied by x6.
Random Wild
After each spin, two wilds are placed at random positions on the reels, covering whatever symbols were there.
Stacking features
The interesting part is what happens next. When a feature is already running and another scatter lands, the genie adds a further randomly chosen feature and the spin counter grows by 5. Up to three features can be active at the same time.
Combinations are where the larger results come from. Expanding Wild and Wild Reel together put more full wild columns on the screen, and either of them paired with the Multiplier lifts every line win those wilds create. A single feature on its own is a much milder event.
RTP, volatility and cost
NetEnt lists one RTP, 96.64%, so the house edge is 3.36%. Over a long run that works out to about $33.60 per $1,000 staked. A hundred spins at $1 cost $3.36 on average and a hundred at $5 cost $16.80, while at $0.20 a spin the average is $0.67.
The volatility is High and the top payout is 2,200x the bet, which is $440 at $0.20, $2,200 at $1 and $11,000 at $5.
Related games
The Wish Master Megaways takes the name to a different engine: a 96.07% RTP, Very high volatility and a 27,018x max win, so a much wider spread at a lower return.
Among High-volatility games with similar figures, Drive: Multiplier Mayhem lists 96.7% with a 2,100x cap, Conan 96.65% with 1,800x and Wild Turkey 96.6% with 2,800x. Wild Water shares the 2,200x ceiling at 96.36%.
Pros
- 96.64% RTP, a 3.36% house edge
- Up to three of five features can run at once
- A published 38% hit frequency
Cons
- The 2,200x cap is modest for a High-volatility game
- Single features are mild; the big outcomes need combinations
- No free demo on record for this game
Verdict
The Wish Master turns every scatter into a random feature and lets up to three of them run together, which keeps the base rules simple and the outcomes varied. A 96.64% RTP is a good figure for NetEnt, while High volatility and a 2,200x ceiling point to uneven sessions with a capped top end. With a 3.36% house edge it remains paid entertainment, so set limits before starting.
