Penny Pelican review
Penny Pelican is a small-town harbour slot from BGaming, released in 2022. The hero is a pelican who lives near a fishing village, and the game follows him through a classic 5x3 layout with 20 paylines. Its rules are short: wilds with multipliers, free spins started by three bonus symbols and an optional Buy Bonus. What lifts it above a plain line slot is that the wild multipliers become sticky in the bonus round.
A classic grid with 13 symbols
The grid has five reels and three rows, with 20 paylines and 13 marine-themed symbols. The studio sets the scene in a harbour on the seashore near a fishermen's village. Nothing in the rules goes beyond traditional line wins, so the rest of the game is built from wilds and the bonus.
Wilds that multiply
Wilds can land only on reels two, three and four. They substitute for all symbols in a winning line except the bonus symbol. Each wild receives a random multiplier, x2 or x3, which applies to every win line it takes part in.
If a winning combination holds more than one multiplied wild, their multipliers are summed instead of multiplied. A line with a x2 and a x3 wild therefore pays five times, not six.
Free spins and Fortune's Wheel
Three bonus symbols on reels one, three and five start the free spins. Before they begin, Fortune's Wheel picks the number of spins at random, between 9 and 18. The rules say plainly that the feature cannot be retriggered.
During the round, any wild with a x2 or x3 multiplier on reels two to four becomes sticky and stays in place until the end. So the board can only fill up with multiplied wilds as the spins go on, which is where the round gets its value.
Buy Bonus
The free spins can be triggered from the main game by paying the price on the Buy Bonus button. The price adjusts automatically if the bet is changed, and the button is deactivated while the bonus round is running.
RTP, volatility and max win
The only RTP on record is 95.98%, a house edge of 4.02% and about $40.20 lost per $1,000 wagered. A hundred spins cost $0.80 on average at $0.20, $4.02 at $1 and $20.10 at $5.
Volatility is Very high. Our catalogue does not list a max win. BGaming's page states that players can win up to 3,525 times the stake, so that figure is the studio's claim.
Comparable Very high games
Lucky Crew shares the 95.98% RTP, released a year later in 2023. From 2022, Forty Fruity Million and Wild Cash x9990 list 96.1%, Halloween Bonanza 96.11% and Gold Rush - Johnny Cash 96.14%. Hottest 666 has 96%. All carry the Very high label.
Pros
- Wild multipliers of x2 and x3 that are added together
- Wilds with multipliers stay sticky through the free spins
- Number of free spins is set by a wheel between 9 and 18
- Free official demo available
Cons
- No retrigger inside the free spins
- Very high volatility
- The 3,525x max win comes only from the studio, not the catalogue
Verdict
Penny Pelican keeps things simple: 20 paylines, wilds worth x2 or x3 on the middle reels and a bonus where those wilds stick. At 95.98% RTP the house edge is 4.02%, a little above some peers, and the Very high volatility label means long quiet spells are plausible. Use the free demo to test the pace, and treat the studio's 3,525x claim as the ceiling rather than a target.
