Hotline review

Hotline is a NetEnt slot drenched in neon and retro Miami styling, released on 22 March 2018. Its distinctive idea is that you set part of the volatility yourself. Each of the three rows can be switched on as a Hotline, and wilds that land on an active row expand, lock and trigger re-spins. More Hotlines mean a higher bet and more chances at those wilds. The RTP is 97.04%.

Choosing your Hotlines

The grid has five reels and three rows, with 30 lines that are always in play. Every row can be turned into a Hotline. One is always active by default, and at that setting the game plays at the base bet of 15 coins per bet level.

Switching on a second Hotline doubles the cost to 30 coins, and lighting all three raises it to 45 coins, triple the base bet. Each additional Hotline increases the chance that a wild lands on an active row, which is what drives both the expanding wilds and the re-spins. NetEnt calls this multi-level variance: the player chooses how much extra to pay for a more feature-heavy game.

Hotline Bonus Bet

Rows can be activated or deactivated individually. One Hotline costs 15 coins per bet level, two cost 30 and three cost 45. More active rows raise the chance of expanding wilds and re-spins, but the higher price applies to every spin, including those that land nothing.

Wilds and re-spins

Wilds can appear in the main game, the re-spins and the free spins, and they substitute for all symbols except scatters. A wild on an inactive row behaves like a normal wild. A wild that lands on an active Hotline expands to cover its entire reel, which lets it count towards the best possible combination on each line through that reel.

Re-Spins

In the main game, a wild on an active Hotline expands and awards a re-spin, with the expanded wild locked in place. Each new wild landing on an active Hotline adds another re-spin. The sequence ends when a re-spin brings no new wild on an active row. Re-spins keep the bet, coin value and Hotline setting of the spin that started them.

Seven free spins with locked wilds

Three scatters on reels 1, 3 and 5 award 7 free spins. Throughout the round, any wild that lands on an active Hotline expands and stays locked on its reel until the feature ends. Locked wilds therefore accumulate, so the later spins of a round can have several full wild reels at once.

The free spins cannot be retriggered, and they use the bet level, coin value and Hotline configuration from the triggering spin. If free spins and re-spins are triggered on the same spin, the free spins are played first. Their winnings are added to the triggering round's wins at the end.

A high RTP and a modest ceiling

At 97.04%, Hotline has a house edge of just 2.96%. Over a long period that comes to about $29.60 per $1,000 wagered. One hundred spins cost $0.59 on average at $0.20, $2.96 at $1 and $14.80 at $5.

NetEnt also publishes a hit frequency of 28%, meaning roughly 28 in every 100 spins return some win, many of them smaller than the stake. Volatility is rated Medium. The maximum payout is 1,200x the bet: $240 at $0.20, $1,200 at $1 and $6,000 at $5. That ceiling is modest, which fits a game designed around frequent, mid-sized features rather than rare huge ones.

The studio lists a bet range of 0.15 to 450 in euros. Our data does not show whether the RTP changes with the number of active Hotlines, so the 97.04% figure is best read as the published headline value.

Hotline 2 and close matches

Hotline 2 takes a very different line, with a 96.05% RTP, a Very high rating and a 3,500x cap. Players who value the original's return have closer alternatives in the NetEnt range: Steam Tower shares the 97.04% RTP with a 1,000x cap, Secrets of Atlantis lists 97.07% and 1,600x, and Reel Rush sits at 96.96% with 1,000x, all rated Medium.

Pros

  • Hotline system lets you choose how feature-heavy each spin is
  • Free spin wilds lock and accumulate on active rows
  • Published 28% hit frequency and Medium volatility

Cons

  • Max payout of 1,200x is modest
  • Each extra Hotline raises the bet by the full base amount
  • Free spins cannot be retriggered; no official free demo listed

Verdict

Hotline gives the player a lever that most slots lack: choosing one, two or three active rows to buy more expanding wilds and re-spins at a higher price per spin. The 97.04% RTP is excellent for NetEnt and the 28% hit frequency and Medium volatility point to a steady game, while the 1,200x ceiling keeps the top end modest. Start with a single Hotline and remember the 2.96% house edge still applies.
