Gemix review

Gemix has no free spins. Instead, Play'n GO's 2014 slot gives a 7x7 grid of gems a meter that charges with every win, four transforming effects that fire when it fills, and a journey through three worlds, each with its own kind of wild. A Super Charge can triple the wins of a round. It is a puzzle-like design, rated Medium volatility, with a top RTP of 96.83%.

Clusters and cascades

Symbols drop into a 7x7 grid. A win needs 5 or more matching symbols connected horizontally or vertically. Winning clusters are removed, new symbols fall into the gaps, and the cascade continues until no new winning combination can form.

Every win in a game round charges the crystal charge meter. That meter, rather than a scatter, is what unlocks the special effects.

The crystal charge effects

When the meter is full and the cascades have stopped, one of four effects is activated. Each reshapes the grid in a different way, and the game then carries on, so the meter can charge again for another effect within the same round.

Chain Lightning

Two opposite corner symbols fire electrical arcs into the grid. Every symbol the arcs hit is transformed into one of the corner symbols, which can create large matching groups at once.

Light Beam

Light rays shoot vertically and horizontally from one symbol on the grid. All symbols in that column and row are transformed into other symbols, reshuffling a cross through the board.

Crystal Warp

A symbol on the grid is selected, and it and every matching symbol are warped into other symbols. This removes one type from the board and replaces it in a single move.

Nova Blast

A selected symbol explodes and removes its neighbours. The blast then retracts and leaves a core made entirely of one symbol, which can seed a new cluster.

Super Charge

Once the meter is full, the round can go further. Winning on enough additional symbols before the cascades run out fully super charges the meter. When that happens, the wins already achieved and every further win after the effect in that round are multiplied by 3. It can only happen once per game round, and it is the closest thing Gemix has to a bonus multiplier.

Three worlds, three wilds

Each world comes with three patterns, and the active one is marked on screen. Winning on the indicated grid positions clears it. Clearing all three moves the game to the next world and pays the World Bonus, which increases with any win during a game round.

Every world also has its own wild, which can appear on rounds that produce no win. These wilds substitute for any symbol and are removed when they form part of a winning combination.

Miner's world

Wild symbols drop from the top and land in different positions, replacing regular symbols. Up to 10 wilds can appear at once.

Princess' world

An edge symbol is picked as a starting point and turned wild. The wild then spreads through adjacent symbols until it reaches another edge of the grid.

Wizard's world

Up to 8 sticky wilds can appear. They do not fall when symbols below are removed and are not removed when part of a win. They last for one game round or until Crystal Charge is triggered.

The sequels took a different direction. Gemix 2 from 2021 lists 96.26% and Gemix 100 from 2024 lists 96.2%, both rated Very high. From the same 2014 vintage with Medium volatility, Mystery Joker lists 96.98%, Pearls of India 96.87% and Enchanted Crystals 96.72%.

Pros

  • Four crystal charge effects make each round play out differently
  • Super Charge triples a round's wins
  • Three worlds with distinct wild mechanics add long-term variety

Cons

  • Lower RTP versions go down to 84.9%
  • No free spins round
  • Many rules to absorb before the mechanics make sense
  • No published max win

Verdict

Gemix replaces free spins with a system: a meter charged by cluster wins, four transforming effects, a once-per-round triple multiplier and three worlds with their own wilds. Medium volatility keeps the swings moderate. At its top version the 96.83% RTP is strong for Play'n GO, but four lower versions exist, down to 84.9%, so the version in the game's information matters.
