Scroll of Seth review

Scroll of Seth sends you beneath the Egyptian sands after a relic belonging to Seth, the god of storms, deserts and disorder. Play'n GO released it in 2023 on a 5x3 grid with 50 paylines. Its signature is a horizontal reel that sits above the main board and spins in Wilds, but only once the scroll symbol has landed on the third reel. Five RTP versions are on record, and the gap between the top and bottom ones is unusually wide.

How a spin pays

The base game is a conventional line slot. Symbols are matched across the 50 potential paylines on a 5x3 board, so a standard win depends on the usual left-to-right alignment. The studio says the interesting part only starts once the features are triggered, and the feature it highlights first is the scroll.

The horizontal reel

When the scroll symbol lands on the third reel, it wakes a dormant horizontal reel above the grid. That reel spins with Wild symbols on it, and a Wild that stops above a base reel can fill that whole reel. The studio links this to significant wins, which is plausible: a reel full of Wilds touches many of the 50 lines at once. Until the scroll lands, the horizontal reel stays inactive.

Second tier of the Scroll bonus

During free spins, landing a second Scroll of Seth unlocks a second tier. The scroll then joins the horizontal reel, and if it lands on that reel after the spin, extra Wild multipliers are added that can extend onto the reels. The rules do not give multiplier values, so the size of these boosts has to be read in the demo.

Free spins

Three or more Golden Ankh scatters trigger the free spins. The studio says the number of spins varies with the scatter count, but the text we hold does not list the amounts. The free spins are also the only place where the second scroll tier is described, which means the strongest version of the horizontal reel sits inside the bonus.

Five RTP versions

The headline RTP is 96.31%, a house edge of 3.69%, or about $36.90 lost per $1,000 wagered. The other versions are 94.31% (5.69%, $56.90), 91.31% (8.69%, $86.90), 87.31% (12.69%, $126.90) and 84.31% (15.69%, $156.90).

Across 100 spins at $1, the top version costs $3.69 on average and the bottom one $15.69. At $0.20 the figures are $0.74 and $3.14, and at $5 they are $18.45 and $78.45. Volatility is Very high, which means returns arrive unevenly. No max win is published.

Alternatives with the same rating

Play'n GO's other Very high volatility 2023 releases come close on RTP. Wild Bandolier lists 96.29%, Return of the Green Knight 96.28%, Rascal Riches 96.23% and Ronin's Honour 96.22%. Scales of Dead has 96.21% and Gargantoonz 96.2%.

Pros

  • Horizontal Wild reel can fill whole base reels on a 50-line board
  • A second scroll in free spins adds Wild multipliers
  • Top RTP of 96.31%, a 3.69% house edge
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • Very high volatility, so long dry stretches are likely
  • Free spin counts and multiplier values are not in the available text
  • Lowest RTP version has a 15.69% house edge

Verdict

Scroll of Seth keeps its structure simple: lines on a 5x3 grid, and one feature that makes a lot of noise. The horizontal Wild reel is easy to understand, though the strongest part sits in the free spins. At 96.31% and Very high volatility, it will suit patient players with small stakes. Check which RTP is quoted first, since the lowest version takes more than four times the top one.
