Minesweeper review
Minesweeper is a casual game from BGaming, listed here with a 2016 release year. It borrows the name of the familiar computer timekiller but plays differently: there are no reels and no cards, only a green field above an abyss with bombs hidden in the grass. You walk across it step by step, each safe step raises your winnings, and a single bomb ends the round. The twist is that you can shape the field before you start.
Walking the field
A round is a journey from one end of the field to the other. Each move presents a row of squares, and exactly one square in each row hides a bomb. You select a square to move forward. If it is clear, it is marked with a red flag and your multiplier grows. If it holds the bomb, the game ends. The studio adds sound and smoke to the explosion, which is why it says losing is part of the fun.
At any moment you can press the Collect button to cash out. That ends the round and pays what the multiplier has built up so far.
Choosing the size of the field
This is where Minesweeper differs from fixed-grid step games. The studio lists a range of field sizes: from 3 to 15 moves in length, and from 2 to 6 squares per move. A move with 2 squares has one bomb among two, and a move with 6 squares has one bomb among six.
The text we have does not publish the multiplier for each size, so we cannot say how the payout scales with the settings. The free demo is the place to see how a given size plays.
Field length
Sets the number of moves needed to reach the other end, anywhere from 3 to 15. A longer field means more safe squares to find before the round is complete.
Squares per move
Sets how many squares you choose from on each move, from 2 to 6. Each move has one hidden bomb, whatever the number of squares.
The numbers
The RTP on record is 98.4%, a house edge of 1.6%. Over a long run that is about $16 lost per $1,000 wagered. For 100 rounds the average cost is $0.32 at a $0.20 bet, $1.60 at $1 and $8 at $5, which is $500 wagered.
The sources disagree on two points. The catalogue publishes neither a volatility label nor a max win. BGaming's page says the game has low volatility and gives a maximum multiplier of up to 15.11x, depending on how many bombs you avoid. We pass those on as the studio's statements.
A round is random and independent of the previous one. The field size you choose changes how outcomes are spread, but the long-run return stays at the published 98.4%, and no pattern or cash-out habit alters it.
Related game
A later version, Minesweeper XY, followed in 2022 and is listed with the same 98.4% RTP. The studio's text for both is very similar, so use the demos to see whether the presentation differs.
Pros
- Field length from 3 to 15 and 2 to 6 squares per move let you change the round
- Collect button cashes out at any point
- 98.4% RTP gives a house edge of 1.6%
- Free official demo available
Cons
- No volatility label or max win in the catalogue; low volatility and 15.11x come only from studio copy
- The available text does not list the multiplier for each field size
Verdict
Minesweeper is a straightforward bomb-avoiding game with one useful extra: adjustable field size. The 98.4% RTP and 1.6% house edge are the figures to weigh first, though the studio's own mention of low volatility and a 15.11x maximum is not backed by catalogue data. It is paid entertainment, and the free demo is the place to learn how the settings affect a round.
