Mega Joker review
Mega Joker dates from 2008 and is a three-reel slot with five fixed lines. What sets it apart is a second layer. Wins from the basic game can be moved into a Supermeter mode played on the top reels, where the bets are higher. The catalogue lists a 99% RTP, which leaves a house edge of just 1%, together with a Very high volatility label.
Two modes on one machine
The game is a 3x3 slot with five fixed lines. In the basic mode you play at a chosen coin value, with a stated bet range of €1.00 to €10.00 in the studio specification. When you win there, you are moved automatically to the Supermeter mode, and the win is added to the Supermeter credit shown in the middle of the machine.
Supermeter play happens on the top reels, with bets of 20, 40, 100 or 200 coins at the coin value you picked. You can collect your Supermeter credit and send it back to the basic mode at any stage. Wins in this mode are paid by the highlighted paytable, depending on the current bet.
Mystery wins and the progressive jackpot
Beyond the two modes, the studio lists two further features: mystery wins and a progressive jackpot.
Mystery wins
Jokers on the reels can award a mystery win at various bets. The amount depends on where the jokers sit and on the current bet. As the studio's example, at a bet of 100 coins a joker on the middle reel gives a mystery win of between 100 and 2000 coins.
Progressive jackpot
The jackpot is awarded on a randomly selected game round. Its value, shown in a box on the screen, grows every time the basic game is played. The studio gives no figure or odds, so it is best treated as a possible extra, not part of the normal maths.
Two figures for the maximum win
The catalogue lists a max win of 200x the bet. The studio's text tells a different story for the Supermeter: it says the maximum win in that mode is 2000 coins. The two are not measured the same way, since one is a multiple of the bet and the other is a coin amount, and neither mentions the progressive jackpot. We pass on both and attribute each: 200x is the catalogue figure, 2000 coins is NetEnt's statement for the Supermeter.
The maths
Mega Joker has one RTP on record, 99%. That means a house edge of 1%, or about $10 lost per $1,000 wagered over a long run. A 100-spin session costs about $0.20 at a $0.20 bet, $1 at $1 and $5 at $5. The studio text does not say how the 99% splits between the basic and Supermeter modes, so we do not either.
The hit frequency is listed at 17%, a little more than one spin in six. A low hit frequency fits the Very high rating: most spins return nothing, so the high RTP is spread over fewer paying results. Using the catalogue's 200x figure, the top win is $40 at a $0.20 bet, $200 at $1 and $1,000 at $5.
Similar games
Jackpot 6000 from 2007 is the nearest match on RTP at 98.9%, with a 600x max win and a Very high rating. The remaining neighbours list far lower returns: Joker Pro and Dead or Alive 2 at 96.8%, with 1,000x and 1,600x, Gladiator Clash at 96.1% with 1,006x, Street Fighter II at 96.08% with 1,200x and Gorilla Kingdom at 96.03% with 1,700x. Dead or Alive 2 dates from 2019.
Pros
- 99% RTP, a house edge of only 1%
- Supermeter mode lets you carry basic-mode wins into higher bets
- Mystery wins and a progressive jackpot sit on top of the basic and Supermeter modes
- Free official demo available
Cons
- Hit frequency of 17% and Very high volatility mean many empty spins
- Catalogue max win of 200x is lower than any of the similar games listed here (600x to 1,700x)
- The studio gives no breakdown of the 99% RTP between modes
Verdict
Mega Joker is a 2008 three-reel machine whose appeal lies in its numbers and its Supermeter structure, not in features or visuals. A 99% RTP means a 1% house edge, but Very high volatility and a 17% hit frequency make the path bumpy, and the catalogue puts the max win at 200x. Treat it as paid entertainment, and use the free demo to understand how the two modes hand credit to each other.
