Los Muertos review

Los Muertos takes the Mexican Day of the Dead to a gloomy cemetery on five reels, four rows and 40 paylines. Wazdan released it in 2018, and its whole design rests on Giant Symbols: blocks of 2x2 or 3x3 that can cover a large share of the screen. A Giant Bonus Symbol opens a small bonus slot that hands out instant prizes or free spins, and in those free spins a 3x3 Giant Wild joins in.

Giants on the reels

In the main game every symbol can be drawn as a Giant Symbol, appearing as a 2x2 or 3x3 block. On a grid only four rows tall, a 3x3 block covers most of three reels at once, so a single giant can feed many of the 40 paylines in one go.

That changes how the game feels compared with a standard line slot. Instead of matching single symbols reel by reel, the big moments come from large blocks lining up with each other.

The bonus slot

Landing a Giant Bonus Symbol activates a mini bonus game. In it, the draw can produce either Free Spins symbols or win multiplier icons of 1x, 3x or 5x. Each multiplier drawn pays an instant cash prize, and three Free Spins symbols activate the Free Spins feature.

So the Giant Bonus Symbol never leads to nothing: the mini game resolves into cash, free spins, or both, depending on what is drawn.

Bonus Slot

Started by a Giant Bonus Symbol anywhere on the reels. Draws Free Spins icons or 1x, 3x or 5x multiplier icons; each multiplier converts into an instant cash prize, while three or more Free Spins icons open the free spins.

Free spins and the Giant Wild

Three Free Spins icons in the bonus slot award 6 free spins, and each icon beyond the third adds one more spin.

During the round, only the Giant Bonus Symbol, the Giant Wild and the four highest-paying symbols can appear as giants. That filter removes the low-value giants and makes the blocks that do land more valuable on average.

Giant Wild

A 3x3 block that appears only during free spins. It substitutes for every symbol except the Giant Bonus Symbol and pays the highest possible winning combination on a payline according to the paytable, so it can complete several lines at their best value at once.

The gamble option

Wazdan includes a gamble feature that offers a chance to double a win with one click. It is optional. Each time it is used, a win already collected is put back at risk, so it adds volatility to a session rather than value.

What it costs and how it compares

The only listed RTP is 96.29%, which leaves a 3.71% house edge, roughly $37.10 per $1,000 wagered. A 100-spin session averages $0.74 at $0.20, $3.71 at $1 and $18.55 at $5.

Volatility is rated Medium. No maximum win is recorded in our catalogue, and no official demo is listed.

Los Muertos II arrived in 2023 with a slightly higher 96.41% RTP, also Medium. Among 2018 Wazdan titles, Mayan Ritual shares the 96.29% figure, while Hot Party Deluxe lists 96.42% and Double Tigers 96.43%, all rated Medium.

Pros

  • Giant 2x2 and 3x3 symbols can cover many of the 40 paylines at once
  • Bonus slot always ends in a cash prize, free spins or both
  • 3x3 Giant Wild in free spins pays the best combination per line
  • Medium volatility

Cons

  • Only 6 free spins as a base award
  • RTP of 96.29% leaves a 3.71% house edge
  • No max win on record and no official free demo listed

Verdict

Los Muertos builds its 40-line, 5x4 game around Giant Symbols, adds a bonus slot that converts multipliers into instant cash or opens free spins, and brings in a 3x3 Giant Wild for the bonus round. The RTP is 96.29% and the volatility is Medium, a balanced profile. The optional gamble feature adds risk rather than value. Check the paytable in the game first and budget for a 3.71% house edge.
