Gemhalla review

Thor stands beside the world tree Yggdrasil and plays the role of a multiplier god. That is the premise of Gemhalla, a 2023 BGaming slot where gems pay anywhere on the screen, refills extend every spin and multiplier symbols worth x2 to x500 can land in both the main game and the bonus. In the free spins those multipliers do not reset, they pile up. A 97.17% RTP keeps the house edge at 2.83%.

Counting gems, not lines

A win is decided by how many of the same symbol are on the screen at the end of a spin. Where they sit is irrelevant. Once a win is paid, the winning symbols are removed and the empty cells fill with symbols from above. BGaming says this refilling continues without a limit until no new combination appears, and the full total is credited only after the last refill of a base spin.

This means a single stake can produce a chain of wins. It also means that a multiplier landing anywhere in that chain affects the whole spin's total, which is where the game's character comes from.

Multipliers in two modes

Multiplier symbols carry random values from x2 to x500, and the way they are applied depends on the mode.

Multipliers in the main game

If several multiplier symbols drop in one spin and that spin produces a win, their values are added together and the sum is applied to the spin's total win. A spin with multipliers but no win does nothing with them, and nothing carries over to the next spin.

Multipliers in the free spins

Here the values accumulate. Whenever a winning spin includes multiplier symbols, their values join a running total. Later winning spins add theirs on top, and each win is multiplied by the current values plus everything collected earlier in the round. Late wins in a long round can therefore carry a large factor.

Getting into the bonus

Scatters can appear on any reel. Four or more award 15 free spins, and during the round three or more scatters in one spin retrigger the feature. The studio's text does not state how many spins a retrigger adds.

Two paid options exist in the main game, and they cannot be active at the same time.

Buy Bonus

The free spins can be bought for 100 times the bet. The round starts on the spin after the purchase. At this price, a single buy equals 100 ordinary spins of stake, so it concentrates a lot of budget into one outcome.

Chance x2

Raises the bet by 25% to improve the chance of hitting scatters and starting the free spins. It is disabled while Buy Bonus is active, and the reverse is also true.

Return and risk

The RTP is 97.17% in its only listed version, a house edge of 2.83%. Over a long run that is about $28.30 per $1,000 wagered. For 100 spins the average cost is $0.57 at $0.20, $2.83 at $1 and $14.15 at $5.

The volatility is Very high. A good RTP does not make sessions smoother; with accumulating multipliers concentrating value in the bonus, many sessions will finish well below average and a few far above it. Our catalogue has no max win for the game, while BGaming's page names a maximum multiplier of x5,000 the bet, which is $5,000 at $1.

Who should look at it

Value-minded players get a 97.17% RTP, and anyone who enjoys watching a total grow will like how the bonus multipliers stack up. Those who dislike long quiet stretches should be careful: the design pushes value towards rare, large rounds rather than steady returns.

Variants and look-alikes

Gemhalla X-mas from 2023 keeps the 97.17% RTP with a High rating, and Gemhalla Xtreme from 2026 keeps 97.17% at Very high. Gemza and Gemza X-mas, both 2023, share the same figure and rating. Merge Up from 2023 lists 97.25%, and Savage Buffalo Spirit and Wild Chicago both sit at 97.1%.

Pros

  • Free spin multipliers accumulate across the whole round
  • Multipliers of x2 to x500 can also land in the main game
  • Free official demo available

Cons

  • Very high volatility makes results highly uneven
  • The 100x Buy Bonus is a large single outlay
  • No max win in our catalogue; the x5,000 figure comes from studio copy

Verdict

Gemhalla stands out for its 97.17% RTP and for free spins in which multipliers from x2 to x500 build into a running total. Pay-anywhere gems and unlimited refills keep each spin moving, and multipliers work in the base game too. The Very high volatility means a strong RTP does not translate into smooth sessions. Start with the free demo and keep stakes small relative to the budget; the 2.83% house edge still applies.
