Break Away Deluxe review
Break Away Deluxe takes Microgaming's ice hockey theme to a larger 5x5 board, built with Stormcraft Studios and released in January 2019. Winning symbols roll away and refill, two skaters can crash together to turn a middle reel wild, and the free spins add a multiplier that climbs with every roll. One unusual detail sits before the first spin: you choose how many paylines to play, from 18 up to 88.
Picking a line set
Four line options are on offer: 18, 38, 68 or 88. The active set is shown on the left of the screen, and those indicators double as buttons that change the stake and light up the matching lines. According to the studio page, the bet range runs from 0.18 to 44 per spin.
More lines mean more ways for a combination to land and a higher cost per spin. The RTP figure in our catalogue is one number for the game, so the choice changes the stake rather than the published return.
Rink-side features in every spin
The theme comes through in the symbols, styled like hockey cards: players, a referee, a mascot, skates and an ice machine on a blue rink background. Two mechanics run in the main game.
Rolling Reels
Active in both the base game and the free spins. Symbols in a winning combination are removed and new ones fall from above to fill the space. If the new arrivals form another win, the process repeats, continuing until no further combination appears.
Smashing Wilds
A random base-game modifier that can occur on any spin. Two hockey players skate in from opposite sides and meet on one of the middle reels, which turns completely wild. A full wild reel in the centre connects with many more lines across the 5x5 grid.
Twelve free spins and a climbing multiplier
Three or more scatters landing together start 12 free spins. Rolling Reels stays active and gains a multiplier trail: each successive roll within a spin moves the multiplier through 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x and 8x, in that order. Once no more combinations form, the multiplier is applied to that spin's winnings and resets for the next spin.
The second upgrade is Growing Wilds. For the whole round, the wild is super stacked on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5, which makes long chains of rolls more likely to continue and, with them, higher steps on the trail. That pairing is where the game's 3,200x ceiling is most likely to be approached.
Return and risk
Microgaming lists 96.88% for this game, a house edge of 3.12%. As a long-run average, $1,000 of bets loses about $31.20. Translated into 100-spin sessions, that is $0.62 at $0.20 per spin, $3.12 at $1 and $15.60 at $5.
Volatility is rated High. The max win of 3,200x converts to $640 at a $0.20 stake, $3,200 at $1 and $16,000 at $5. That combination, a relatively modest cap with High volatility, suggests long gaps without a significant result, so the stake is worth setting low enough to absorb them.
Where it sits in the Break Away line
The original Break Away lists 96.29% with High volatility, so the Deluxe version returns more on paper. Break Away Deluxe - Triple Pots lists 96.1% and raises the cap to 10,000x. Outside the series, High-rated games with similar numbers include Kong's Jungle Tower at 96.3% and 5,000x, and Ultra Ace at 96.15% and 2,800x.
Pros
- Free spin multiplier trail climbs from 2x to 8x on rolling wins
- Super stacked wilds on four reels throughout the bonus
- Selectable line sets of 18, 38, 68 or 88
Cons
- High volatility with a 3,200x cap
- The multiplier resets after every free spin
- No free official demo in our data
Verdict
Break Away Deluxe offers a clear structure: rolling reels and occasional smashing wilds in the base game, then 12 free spins with stacked wilds and a 2x to 8x multiplier trail. The 96.88% RTP is strong for Microgaming, but High volatility and a 3,200x cap mean results come unevenly and the top is limited. Choose a line set and stake that suit your budget, and treat it as paid entertainment.
